In an era of increasing data density and "Large-N" seismology, it's useful to remember the value of good data quality and continuity. There's still much to learn from N=1 seismology!

We use just a single seismometer located near Lake Superior to demonstrate this and to predict average daily ice cover on the lake during the 2014 Polar Vortex.

As ice cover increases, seismic noise caused by the lake microseism decreases in a predictable way allowing the use of seismic observations to predict and monitor ice cover.

Estimating Ice Cover on the Great Lakes Using Seismic Ambient Noise Great Lakes microseism noise (0.5โ€“2ย Hz) observed on nearby seismometers decreases linearly with increasing ice cover A linear transfer function is empirically determined and used to estimate dail...

@drrockdoctor.bsky.social and I just published a paper in GRL showing the power of long-operating seismic stations as a tool for studying changes in lake ice cover.

Ambient Noise Analyses at Broadband Oceanโ€Bottom Seismometers: Data Quality and Transfer Function Corrections | Seismological Research Letters | GeoScienceWorld Abstract. Seismic ambient noise tomography has revolutionized regional crustal and upperโ€mantle imaging for broadband oceanโ€bottom seismometer (BBOBS)

Super proud of this paper w @hajanisz.bsky.social that went live a couple weeks ago!

The culmination of countless Zoom meetings (ok, often happy hours, beer in hand) nerding out on OBS data. Some of the most fun I've had on a paper. Yes, there'll be more...

๐Ÿคœ๐Ÿค› Finally, best of all โ€” you'll get to interact w/ the amazing scientists collaborating on the project including @seismoshuck.bsky.social at LSU, Anne Bรฉcel at LDEO, and Harm Van Avendonk at UTIG and their groups in addition to scientists at SU.

If this all sounds interesting, please reach out!

๐ŸŒŠ You'll use surface waves recorded by the OBS both from ambient noise and active source to constrain the crust and anisotropic fabric of the lithospheric mantle, which holds a record of past asthenospheric flow. Plus, develop new imaging strategies that combine passive and active datasets.

6 months ago 0 0 1 0

๐Ÿ”Ž The main science questions are:

- What process(es) control asthenospheric flow during the opening of a new ocean basin?

- How does early slower spreading differ from later faster spreading?

- How quickly does the chemistry of the mantle source mature beneath a new ridge?

๐Ÿšข You'll get to participate in a 43-day cruise on the R/V Marcus G. Langseth in the Northwest Atlantic, where we will collect passive short-period OBS and active-source seismic reflection/refraction data. This will include a 700km long profile consisting of 52 OBS and spanning 50Myr of seafloor.

๐Ÿ“ข๐ŸŒŠ Funded PhD position in Marine Seismology at Syracuse University ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ“ข

I'm seeking an enthusiastic student to join our Seismology group at SU! You'll be part of a collaborative NSF-funded team to collect new marine seismic data to work out the tectonics of early seafloor spreading in the Atlantic.

I have posted this bare earth lidar image of a lava flow in central Oregon a few years ago, but itโ€™s probably worth sharing it again (data source: gis.dogami.oregon.gov/maps/lidarvi...)
