Stranded and dying, the German whale is a parable of our troubled relationship with these sea giants Even as we empathise with these intelligent animals, our relentless push for resources kills them in their thousands, just as whalers once hunted them to the brink of extinction

oh the sadness of the whale! and what it says about ourselves

In 2019, a retired captain Jānis visited the Sea Library. It turns out that he was so inspired afterward that he began cataloguing his own sea books. Today, his daughter reached out to say that he has passed away and has dedicated all his books to the Sea Library. I am very moved and deeply humbled

1/5 This is complex. I hope I can do my thoughts justice.

There's a campaign going on currently against Norway's continued hunting of minke whale; the new killing season is upon us, despite the fact that domestic consumption of whalemeat continues to fall and much of it will be wasted.

Blackouts, broken records and a message from the past: five key moments from Artemis II’s lunar flyby Crew of Orion capsule spent emotional day documenting surface of moon – and paying homage to astronauts who paved the way

“Some peaks were so bright, the pilot Victor Glover said, they looked as if they were covered in snow. Mission specialist Christina Koch described lunar craters as looking like a “lampshade with tiny pinprick holes&the light shining through”.”

And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour.

The Astonishing Lessons of a Sperm-Whale Birth In 2023, researchers witnessed a rare event—a sperm whale being born. Their findings suggest a previously unknown level of coöperation among whales.

“Not only did I get to witness the birth but also I got to watch the normally sober-minded researchers react to it. (..) “Oh, my God,” one of the scientists said, clutching his head. “Oh, my God, oh, my God.”
“Holy fucking shit,” another exclaimed.” @newyorker.com

Doing the dishes. #camping #evening A remote little island you paddle to, no wifi, no one else. The books you bring don't get read. Decisions you intend to make don't get made. Everything stops mattering.

Unexplored deep-water worlds in Caribbean revealed for the first time Scientists discover underwater mountain ranges, golden towers of coral, and never-before-seen sea creatures.

“They found a pelican eel with a glowing pink tail that flashes red to lure in food, a barreleye fish with tubular eyes pointing upwards to see the silhouettes of its prey, and a dragonfish with a glowing rod under its chin.”
