I had the opportunity to confront Pete Hegseth's bigoted spiritual mentor, Pastor Doug Wilson, and call him out on his history of hate, his misreading of the Bible, his hijacking of Jesus, and his cosplay Crusading.
It was worth it.

Tweet from Pete Hegseth: "The War Department is once again restoring freedom to our Joint Force. We are discarding the mandatory flu vaccine requirement, effective immediately."
In World War I more U.S. soldiers died of influenza than from combat. In America's first 145 years of war more soldiers and sailors died from infectious diseases than from enemy action. In every single war in human history more combatants have died of illness and disease than bullets and the blade.
I suspect the Pope sounds "woke" to many Christian conservatives because the US is steeped in prosperity theology, where the point of worship is to deliver health and wealth to believers. Thus, "feed the hungry" and "show mercy for the poor" sounds needlessly political and "woke."
Headline on Hollywood Reporter that reads ”Paddington 4, Escape From New York' Reboot in the Works”
I misread the headline as one movie and got very excited for a moment…
imagine arguing with your devout catholic grandma and shouting "the pope is WEAK on crime"
THE DALAI LAMA IS WEAK ON MONETARY POLICY.
how much money does the marine corps lose
As hurricane season approaches, Democrats should just run an ad with this clip across the South, letting people know what they're in for
Or…what he describes in that post was the actual goal and intent of the entire operation and its proceeding according to plan.
Empathy also rests on counterfactual reasoning, which is why there is such a strong correlation between conservative / libertarian politics and the inability to understand stories at any level deeper than plot
i think this is exactly right and it is part of what i was trying to get at last week when i wrote about the narcissism of the president and his allies. they fundamentally do not believe other people are real, and do not understand the decisions they make.
You wouldn't be ”asking ChatGPT” anything if Max Zorin had managed to flood Silicon Valley in 1985
sky news Sky News @news.sky.com Can NASA's return to the moon bring a divided America together? Can NASA's return to the moon bring a divided America together? America first went to the moon during a year of political turmoil.
A lot depends on who we’re sending there and whether there are any plans to bring them back.
This Palm Sunday, let’s remember...
Jesus chose a donkey of peace instead of a horse of war.
Jesus disarmed his followers instead of forming an army.
Jesus exposed the evil of violence instead of partnering with it.
Jesus laid down his own life instead of taking anyone else’s.
“Surprise at the sheer velocity of the onset of fascism is the result of regarding it as a political rather than criminal entity: it's theft.”
That’s me, just now quoted to me by a friend. While I wait to hear if he knows where he read it, does anyone here know?
Sinners isn’t a horror film because a juke joint is overrun by vampires. Or because the vampires are somehow less of a threat than the Klan.
Sinners is a horror film because no amount of courage or sweet talk is enough to save them.

Maria Popova is right. Just one more point: Trump is doing exactly what Moscow and Beijing want him to do. You’re not cleverly realigning geopolitics when you just follow the lead of the powers that are united against you. They thought this through a long time ago.
2/2. His weakness is something negative, gravitational, so deep that it can draw in a whole country. But only if we fail to see it. Only if we let it.
1/2. He took the greatest military force in history, lost a war to a middle power in a week, begged the world to save him, & demanded the media lie about this & everything else. I try, but at a simple human level I do not see how anyone mistakes this man’s almost supernatural weakness for strength.
Confiscate 99.8% of Andreesen’s net worth for the public good, wait 20 minutes, and then tell him his memory of ever having more than $4 million is false.
Zero chance that whoever staged this Vanity Fair photo, and picked this title, is not a fan of Arrested Development.
I love the idea that *this* US government, which has been nabbing landscapers and five year olds knows where Iranian sleeper cells are but just hasn’t gotten around to doing anything about it yet.
*Trying to will your feet to be bigger.*
I can't emphasize this enough.
These machines have developed sophisticated mathematical models of human language to the point where they can *mimic* human voices so well that we (as humans), being hard-wired to understand language as a strong signal of consciousness, tend to fall for the magic act.
there's a thing I like to call "load-bearing assumptions", that you don't notice until they're suddenly gone (e.g the air you breath has oxygen in it).
the post-ww2 order is a load-bearing assumption for basically the entirety of american life. trump took a sledgehammer to it in the last 90 days.
Now that they're trying to pretend their war is not a war, they've gone back to calling it the Defense Department.
A narcissism so vast it threatens to devour a two hundred and fifty year old experiment.
A US submarine sinking a lonely, dinky Iranian surface ship an ocean away from the theater of the main conflict—and 9000
miles from North America—makes it pretty clear the US is fighting a general war, without the declaration required by the Constitution. www.reuters.com/world/asia-p...
