When Yersinia pestis, plague bacillus, enters the flea gut during a blood meal, it encounters a highly oxidative environment. This work shows that host plasma proteins - particularly albumin - act as transient allies, helping the bacterium withstand early oxidative stress and initiate colonization.

A fascinating Review in Nature Reviews Microbiology shows how ancient pathogen genomics reshapes our understanding of infectious diseases. For Yersinia pestis, it synthesizes decades of work on plague evolution, while highlighting key open questions ahead.
