Weather Is Not A Season My life revolves around the clock. Tiny virgo that lives in my pocket. The cruel dom perched at the edge of my nightstand. The schedule is punishing me and each little endurance comes as shock, I pantomimed weakness but kept surviving, surviving, surviving— Moment to moment worming out of the labyrinth of stasis. Just barely made it to my shift, the vibrating atrophy of completion, sometimes small talk is the only talk you can stomach. The news on the telephone is breaking your heart. A regular can reduce you to tears with kindness. It is cold every spring. Every year sometime complains about the rain. We love to complain about the things we can’t control, and that list keeps getting bigger. But spring does not mean warmth. Summer is not the same thing as the sun. We do not revolve around summer.
States are not traits. We manage to wake up every day and live, despite the indignity of age. Inertia does not ask permission, and now here we are thick in the confusion of the unrecognizable future that was deeper than we even knew possible. Spring means the worms are singing. They are the tiny dragons of the earth. They, like us, cultivate the fire of anger, swirling like disgust in the gut. In the rain, and the cold, and the darkness we throw off the tyranny of sickness and begin the difficult, painful, work of resurrection
My local coffee shop/bar called Coffee Beer asked me to write a poem on the occasion of their seventh anniversary. Here it is:
