Ollie, I think the core of the op's message was that it's okay just to be fantastic, outstanding, marvellous, exceptional, tremendous - and the US edu system is all of that. :) it's undeniably the best by many metrics too (many extensive tho), but not by all - and that's fine too. We send hugs!!

Maybe journals aren’t the root cause of problems in academia just a symptom…

that would make them the "best" scientific system, not an educational one?.. Subjectively, smaller US universities are probably a lot of fun - but I'm personally not aware of any indicators of educational superiority (price tag aside).

Thank you!! The only silver lining is that I didn't customize this one as much as others, so hopefully insurance will just reset the situation. :-\

I only tried pd-m520, but I couldn't imagine that contact pedals can feel differently. Since my previous gravel bike got stolen, maybe I'll try these wolf pedals for the next one !..

Breaking: New study using observational constraints projects that the Atlantic Ocean circulation #AMOC will weaken ~50% by 2100, even for medium emissions and without Greenland melting. 🌊
More realistic models means stronger weakening - not entirely unexpected.

Unlike the author, I find vibe coding useful in many contexts, but I agree with the main message - currently, it's quite far from the silver bullet. a corollary: "thinking as a programmer" will likely remain useful for quite some time

Valery Poshtarov’s portraits of fathers and sons holding hands is a study of “what remains unsaid between men” Unlike many photographers, this Sofia-based image maker has no interest in making his sitters ‘comfortable’ – instead, he seeks vulnerability.

These are lovely: Portraits of fathers and sons holding hands.

The few interactions that I had with Greg left a lasting impression. He was a very thoughtful and fundamentally good person, what a loss

It looks like there will be an open postdoc position in my lab soon. I'll be looking for someone with substantial wet-lab experience in microbiology / microbial ecology / evolution / physiology. If everything goes well, an ad will be coming. But if you know someone, ask them to reach out already.

Anthropic’s Project Glasswing—restricting Claude Mythos to security researchers—sounds necessary to me Anthropic didn’t release their latest model, Claude Mythos (system card PDF), today. They have instead made it available to a very restricted set of preview partners under their newly announced …

Wrote up some thoughts on Anthropic's Project Glassing, where their latest Opus-beating model is available to partnered security research organizations only. Given the recent alarm bells raised by credible security voices I think this is a justified decision.
