Ollie, I think the core of the op's message was that it's okay just to be fantastic, outstanding, marvellous, exceptional, tremendous - and the US edu system is all of that. :) it's undeniably the best by many metrics too (many extensive tho), but not by all - and that's fine too. We send hugs!!
Maybe journals aren’t the root cause of problems in academia just a symptom…
that would make them the "best" scientific system, not an educational one?.. Subjectively, smaller US universities are probably a lot of fun - but I'm personally not aware of any indicators of educational superiority (price tag aside).
