The Columbine massacre was on this date in 1999. Instead of energizing our country to get gun violence under control, it kicked off a new normal. One of the best explanations ever of journalism's destructive impact on mass shootings came from Roger Ebert in his review of Gus Van Sant’s “Elephant.”

For those who missed it: this was the moment The Strokes ensured they’ll never be invited back to Coachella again! I'm so proud of them
Less than $1k to go and 37 hours left! Mark is a great writer and this project sounds like it’s going to continue their streak of cool shit. Let’s help get it over the finish line!
I worked at a comics company where all of UMT took a permanent pay cut when COVID hit so that everyone could keep their jobs.
They did it cause they loved the team and loved the work. They weren't rich or anything, they just were willing to lose a little so some folks wouldn't lose it all.

A clip from The New York Times reads: "But only the entities that officially paid the tariffs are eligible to recover that money. That means that the fuller universe of people affected by Mr. Trump’s policies — including millions of Americans who paid higher prices for the products they bought — are not able to apply for direct relief. The extent to which consumers realize any gain hinges on whether businesses share the proceeds, something that few have publicly committed to do. Some have started to band together in class-action lawsuits in the hopes of receiving a payout."
The average American family paid $1,700 in tariffs last year, according to the bipartisan Congressional Joint Economic Committee. Few will ever see any of that money back. The refunds will go to companies, if doled out at all. What a joke.

Layoffs suck, but there's something about comic industry layoffs that just really guts me. These are dream jobs for people. Often childhood dreams that against all odds have actually come true. And then poof! You're on your own. It's just crushing.
PANEL 1: MATTIE is talking to A GUY. They're both up to their waists in water. MATTIE: Concerning amount of water, don't you think? GUY: Eh! PANEL 2: The water is now up to their shoulders. GUY: I have great news about the future. MATTIE: Oh? This doesn't seem great. PANEL 3: The water is now up to their heads, they both tilt their heads back to speak. The GUY is now holding up his phone. GUY: The KIDS will fix it! They'll fix all of it. I saw it, on my phone. MATTIE: Ohhh I see it now. Phew! PANEL 4: The water fills the frame. The GUY's phone and glasses float atop it.

The workers, mostly of color and many immigrant folk, from FCWA groups do some of the most creative and long-standing organizing anywhere, winning in some of the most exploitative parts of the economy
Several of those struggles are raised up in the book

I think the greatest trick for getting good at creative work i know is - finish making as many mediocre things as possible. Just finish stuff, again and again. Share it or don’t, but put a bow on it, put it aside, make the next thing, repeat.
I’ve had the same editor since 1967. Many times he has said to me over the years or asked me, Why would you use a semicolon instead of a colon? And many times over the years I have said to him things like: I will never speak to you again. Forever. Goodbye. That is it. Thank you very much. And I leave. Then I read the piece and I think of his suggestions. I send him a telegram that says, OK, so you’re right. So what? Don’t ever mention this to me again. If you do, I will never speak to you again

Do you want to see the "big picture" on climate change?
Here it is.
Emissions are on the left, and include CO2, CH4, N2O, and f-gases. Natural CO2 sinks (from healthy forests & oceans) are on the right. And carbon removal, what little there is, is on the right, too. All expressed as GWP100.

That’s why it really makes it unacceptable that climate scientists choose to use the models with the lowest climate sensitivity to make projections of future climate impacts on temperatures rather than models reflecting the higher climate sensitivity we observe in the data.
The “Great Green Wall” in Africa was a bold and inspiring idea. It was supposed to be one of the biggest environmental projects in history.
But, sadly, it's not working as hoped.
What went wrong? Here’s a good summary.

You should WANT to shift your perspective and exercise the determination of will that is necessary to make the world a better place. Because it will. Be. Hard. It’s *easy* to look at AI tools, socially rejected at scale, and abstain and pat yourself on the back.
Do something hard.
ALL collective action starts as individual action. You individual choices matter a LOT, and I think in our hearts we know this. It’s why people reject JK Rowling even while HBO makes a new big budget TV show. It’s why we vote even when the odds of winning feel slim. We all know it matters.
When we outsource our cultural norms to corporations and allow them to dictate how we live our lives, they dictate our values. Our actions DO have power. They want us to feel like it’s useless to act individually. What does it matter if everyone else isn’t doing it? They rely on that mentality.
The good thing is that, we are adaptive creatures. A lot of the comforts we can’t imagine not having, are extremely recent. And we can adapt to not having them just as easily. I also grew up eating a standard American diet, and breaking away from it was a challenge but I would NEVER go back.
I got so worked up I forgot alt text!!!
become a fairer, safer, more equitable society. We HAVE to do all these things. It’s not an if, it’s a when. And it’s a question of how long will people have to die or suffer before we do. How BAD will things have to get before we let go of our uber delivered hamburger that directly funds fascists?
Change necessitates stepping out of your comfort zone. We WILL have to stop using so much plastic, we WILL have to stop relying on abusive labor in the global south, we WILL have to stop eating meat like modern Americans, we WILL have to stop expecting constant comfort and convenience in order to-
It’s sounds dramatic but I don’t have a lot of hope for a society to meaningfully change or progress when someone tells me they can’t give up bacon. We KNOW that our food system is unsustainable, and unless your answer is “less people” there is only one confirmed solution to that problem.
