Clayton Hall's Lost Barns
Clayton Hall's Lost Barns YouTube video by Jacob Mason

Clayton was once the beating heart of industrial Manchester. Everywhere you look you can see traces of it, but it wasn't always like this. Discover Clayton Hall's farming links and some of the farmers who lived and worked on the land.

There’s something timeless about this photograph, yet little is known about it.

Presumably it was taken in the early 20th century, and we assume it was taken as part of a field trip from a local school.

Did you come to Clayton Hall as a child? (1/2)

What links Shakespeare with Clayton Hall?

Sir John Byron—Little Sir John with the Great Beard— once owned and lived there and was a favourite at Elizabeth I’s court. He’s thought to have inspired Lord Berowne (or Biron) in Love’s Labour’s Lost.

At last our ‘Old Lady’ is emerging from behind the scaffolding that has kept her safe during the renovation works.

Thanks to Manchester City Council and especially our local councillors, Clayton Hall will survive for future generations to enjoy.

This week I spoke on the ongoing issues at Royal Mail. The brilliant postal workers have the solutions, they must be listened to and we need to see a network fund, contributed by all those who use it to bring fairness back to the postal sector.

I've signed this statement calling for a reset in Labour to protect our values and future.

We must restore democracy & move away from the current top-down approach. The NEC elections provide the perfect opportunity to do just that.

Clayton Hall is one of Manchester’s oldest surviving buildings and a remarkable piece of local history. I’m very proud to play a small part as a Trustee in helping preserve it for future generations.

The Iranian regime is abominable but the initial strikes on Iran were neither defensive nor lawful. As this dangerous war escalates, hundreds of innocent civilians are dead across the Middle East and UK personnel and citizens are at risk. Urgent action is needed to secure an immediate ceasefire.

The marketisation of higher education has failed. Graduates are paying back tens of thousands only to see their debt grow exponentially. That is unfair and undermines trust. (1/2)

I spoke in Parliament as Chair of the @nujofficial.bsky.social Parliamentary Group. We’ve long campaigned for press freedom abroad, but surveillance and political intimidation of journalists now an appears to be a threat closer to home. (1/2)

Representation, not red tape. ❌

Today, most of the Tories' 2016 Trade Union Act was scrapped, removing restrictions designed to tie unions up in knots. Now our unions can get on with representing members and fighting for better pay and conditions. labourunions.org.uk/deliverinfull/

I've just signed the Restore Labour Democracy statement. We demand an end to the factional culture coming from the top of the Labour Party that has sidelined members and helped alienate voters.

Renovation work inside Clayton Hall is now underway. These things take time, but it is reassuring that @mancitycouncil.bsky.social and Wardens Ltd are being thorough. Better to do the work properly than rush and face extra costs later.

Thank you both for your help and support. 💪

📺Watch: Trust in politics depends on integrity, transparency and accountability. I spoke on @itvpeston.bsky.social about the need for a full inquiry into Mandelson's actions in Government. Leadership means putting the public interest first, always.

📺Watch: #ICYMI MPs voted overwhelmingly this week to scrap the two-child benefit cap, lifting hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty overnight. On @itvpeston.bsky.social I said the Government needs to get its skates on and sell the policies that actually improve lives.

The Water White Paper is a very welcome step. In Salford there were 11,974 sewage spills in 2023 into the Croal & Irwell. Stronger regulation is right, but after decades of failure post privatisation we must now go further and argue for public ownership.

Better rail links mean real benefits for places like Salford. I welcome the Labour Government’s commitment to Northern Powerhouse Rail, starting with TransPennine upgrades and building towards a new Liverpool–Manchester line, boosting jobs and connectivity across the North.

Well done Rachel Reeves and to all who campaigned hard on this. Absolutely the right thing for a Labour Government to do. Will benefit 1.6 million children, and lifts c.500,000 children out of poverty #Budget2025

Britain’s tax system places too much pressure on working families while extreme wealth continues to grow.

A fairer approach would ensure those with the broadest shoulders contribute properly, ease the burden on workers, and provide sustainable funding for the services we all rely on.

It is time to tax wealth more
and workers less so that
everyone has a fair chance to thrive.

I have co-signed a cross party letter calling on the Chancellor to make this year's Budget a turning point. Our tax system asks too much of working people and too little of extreme wealth. [1/2]

I spoke in Parliament about global tax justice. Multinationals shifting billions through tax havens deprive our hospitals, schools and care services of tens of billions every year. It’s time for transparency, fairness and change.
