my addition to this is that you should know the history and know where to break it for fiction. this is different then ignoring the history or writing something that is historically inaccurate. its knowing the what the facts are and applying them in a way where it should still function logically.

does the technology exist? (yes) does it make sense for the character? (yes) could the canon deviate from historical fact and still be consistent in its internal logic? (yes)

even if it probably didn't happen it could have happened. that's the key there.
