Regardless, that's a great quote!

Ha, last time I read Tacitus was high school so it must've really stuck if that's what I'm doing. I used this idea in another piece once so thought I was just paraphrasing myself, but god knows where that came from. I *do* paraphrase Huxley here (acknowledged) & was secretly quite pleased with it.

These monsters from the Valley act as if their own perspective is the organising principle of reality. They flatten the world until it reflects their own image back at them, and they call it order. They recast dominance as necessity, exclusion as clarity, cruelty as truth-telling. What they are building is not just a politics, but a way of being in which other lives appear as obstacles, or worse, as background.

I drove an EV for three days. It saved me money but cost me time With no end in sight to soaring fuel prices, 7.30 decided to take an EV for a test drive to see how far it could take our reporter, and if Australia's EV charging network stacks up.

Really, ABC? This clown driving an unnecessary 130km to a charging station he didn't bother downloading the app for first is like a petrol owner vehicle whinging because they didn't learn how to pump petrol or how to open the fuel cap. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-04...

That's what John Howard and other boosters should recognise instead of trying to tilt the playing field, or rather, spoil the jury pool.

Lives matter but at what cost? COVID-19 mostly kills the aged, but a generation in the prime of life suffers in the shutdown from job losses, suicide, domestic violence and substance abuse.

My favourite of the genre was John Kehoe in the AFR: "My father is 68 and insists he’s had a good run." www.afr.com/politics/fed...

The text says: Orban was also a source of lavish grants and speaking gigs, ultimately paid for by long-suffering EU taxpayers. That’s all over now. Those who have taken those gigs will come under a lot more scrutiny. In Australia they include Tony Abbott, Alexander Downer, Brian Loughnane (former Liberal national director), Greg Sheridan and many less prominent but highly influential figures.

Good piece by John Quiggin on the ousting of Orban, including this observation:

Grace Tame changed laws. She protected children. She gave survivors a voice when the system wanted them silent. The people who undermined her funding did not beat her. They simply made sure she could not afford to keep fighting. That is not a victory for anyone's values. That is a demonstration of their absence
