Greetings from 56.5S 81W where we deployed a @soccomproject.bsky.social @bgc-argo.bsky.social float. It will profile the ocean as it drifts eastwards! Fair winds!
A Christmas gift to the ocean from the team aboard the RV Sikuliaq: one specially wrapped biogeochemical-Argo float from @bgc-argo.bsky.social! 🌊
Profiling floats allow us to get real-time ocean data, helping us be in tune with ocean health and changes.
Today's satellite shoutout 🛰️ is to NASA PACE, which gives us data of ocean color, biogeochemistry, and ecology! 🌊 🧪
Here is chlorophyll-a (signature of photosynthesizing plankton) along with ocean current magnitude and direction (arrows). The red dot is where I currently am on the RV Sikuliaq! ⛴️
It’s very biologically quiet out here on the South Pacific, but we got the company and blessing of a beautiful albatross earlier. 🌊

Depth (0 to 300 m) by time (2022 to 2026) plots of temperature, salinity, particulate organic carbon (POC), chlorophyll (CHL_A), oxygen, nitrate, pH at in situ temp/pressure, and computed dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) for float 5906497 (adopted name Hedy Lamarr).
🌊BGC-Argo float of the month is 5906497 with 4 years under Antarctic sea ice, just popped out. It was adopted by the American School in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and named “Hedy Lamarr” – the actress who co-invented and patented frequency hopping communications. Named for her science contribution. 1/2
And I thought we made a lot of @bgc-argo.bsky.social profiling floats!!!! We're going to have to work harder. @globaloceanbgc.bsky.social @soccomproject.bsky.social
The 3 graphs show temperature, salinity, and oxygen from the surface to 300 m versus year from 2018 through 2025 for profiling float 5905383. The map shows the trajectory of the float from deployment in the Weddell Gyre (green square) and a loop around the Weddell sea to the present position at the red square.
What's interesting as the Thanksgiving Holiday arrives? The first @bgc-argo.bsky.social profiling floats begin to emerge from under Antarctic sea ice each year. Float 5905383 is the first @soccomproject.bsky.social float for 2025/26. It has spent 7.9 years operating under ice.

A new paper, led by GO-BGC researcher @koelling.bsky.social, using @bgc-argo.bsky.social data, examines ocean ventilation in the subpolar North Atlantic. These insights enhance our understanding of how oxygen enters the deep ocean and may aid in predicting future oxygen loss due to climate change.
New research with data from the @bgc-argo.bsky.social floats from a team led by researchers at @mbarinews.bsky.social and @miamirosenstiel.bsky.social + colleagues. Comments from @stephhenson.bsky.social, story by @mack-baysinger.bsky.social.
I want to see the particles that sink carbon to the deep ocean, all the time and in real time. This summer we built an instrument that collects images of sinking particles every second, and visualizes them in 5 different ways. @mbarinews.bsky.social

A decade of BGC-Argo and plankton records shows North Pacific heatwaves reshape food webs and trap small particles in midwater, slowing deep-ocean carbon export. Impacts vary by event, underscoring the need for sustained ocean monitoring. @mbarinews.bsky.social @miamirosenstiel.bsky.social

How cool is this? A LEGO Argo Float! Thanks for the inspo @mbarinews.bsky.social! "Treated" everyone in the brick store to a 5min ad-hoc talk why Argo Floats are so cool and important. Shouldn't have asked what I'm building 🙃

A new study led by @globaloceanbgc.bsky.social researchers at MBARI has found that marine heatwaves can reshape ocean food webs, slowing the transport of carbon to the deep sea and hampering the ocean’s ability to buffer against climate change.

Time series of monthly Northern Pacific Ocean sea surface temperature anomalies from 1850 to August 2025 alongside multi-model expectations of the warming in this area (scenario SSP2-4.5).
The Northern Pacific Ocean is currently smashing temperature records.
And it is reaching these levels far earlier than the current generation of climate models had expected.
