The best part of the March today was marching in the vicinity of the Liberation Brass Band, who played fun music along the entire route. When we got to the 11th St. underpass tunnel, the band’s noise was magnified, the crowd started cheering wildly, and it was crazy and glorious!

The AI Scientist paper is out in Nature today. Runs the full ML research pipeline: idea generation, literature search, coding experiments, running them via agentic tree search, writing the paper in LaTeX, automated review.

This is important.

1. Congress approved higher #NIH budget. But # of awarded grants is low.

2. 94% fewer funding announcements released.

3. Majority of terminated grants have NOT been reinstated.

4. Early career scientists are in limbo.

Impeach Russel Vought.

PNAS Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), a peer reviewed journal of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) - an authoritative source of high-impact, original research that broadly…

Analysis of who the 2025 NIH grant terminations hit. 2,291 grants, $2.45B rescinded. Early-career researchers and women disproportionately affected. 59.8% of terminated asst prof projects were women-led. Training awards heavily cut. www.pnas.org/doi/full/10....

I Wrote Research Funding Announcements for NIH for 22 Years. This Year They’ve Published 14 How NIH went from 756 funding announcements to 14 in two years — and what it means for every disease that depends on federal research

An important read by Elizabeth Ginexi.

New #NIH funding opportunities exist to solicit proposals for research that need attention.

75 NOFOs forecasted. 14 released. The rest are in limbo. And not due to scientific reasons. One factor that is killing US research.

I finally pulled the plug on Twitter after 17 years. What was once a genuinely useful space for scientific discourse is now a bot-infested sewer and has been for a while. The signal-to-noise ratio is effectively zero. Should have left sooner. I'll continue to post here and at blog.stephenturner.us

How Many Research Grants Did the National Cancer Institute Cancel in 2025? Massachusetts had the highest number of terminated cancer grants, and many early-career researchers were affected, finds a study in JAMA.

Massachusetts had the highest number of terminated #cancer grants in 2025.

This year, there have barely been any new funding announcement opportunities from the National Cancer Institute, the LARGEST funder of cancer research in the world.

Most statistical tests you learned separately are the same thing.

t-test, ANOVA, Mann-Whitney, Chi-square, Wilcoxon... all just special cases of linear models. y = b0 + b1*x covers almost everything.

Watched “The Alabama Solution” on the trip to Tokyo. I’m not sure I’ve been this outraged since…the Epstein Files? Will never voluntarily step foot in Alabama and will spit on Kay Ivey if I see her.

Is this guy running against MJ legit? If so, he needs a brass band

The underground Olympics will make up for it by hosting break dancing, brass bands, and rap battles featuring excerpts from the Epstein files.
