Got called to sub for a sitzprobe when I was in college. Off the charts difficult but incredible music. 🥵

We awake to another lovely PNW day w/whales & sunshine, blossoms & buds unfurling; a special time of year.
Yesterday, orcas & plethora of grays. Minkes & a humpback reported too, but no photo confirmation for them.

I can’t stop watching this.
You this probably cost like $500,000 and it was just smithereens in like three seconds.
Oh well, we’re safe from robots taking our jobs for now.
Holy cow that looks incredible
Fully half of my posts are me with my bass or music on a stand.
(The other half are beer-related, so… idk…)
Getting a lot of “it’s never too late to start your career in classical music” posts on IG and… do they… know who I am?
Call me old-fashioned but if your podcast is a TV show then it isn’t really a podcast.
🤣
Just realized that the names of my two favorite types of sandwiches rhyme. 🧐
This has definitely been one of the most out-of-control weeks of my life (and it’s only Thursday!).* The weather isn’t helping. Yesterday a waterspout near Seattle; today, my car is covered in snow. Can we plz just take a break!?
*will expound next week
I actually was thinking the other day of what is probably the strangest thing I've written, "Enhancing Musical Performance."
(Today I would probably call it "Musicmaxxxing")
www.sibetrans.com/trans/articu...
My dissertation was "An exploration of some nontonal pitch-class spaces with implications for a theory of voice leading in post-tonal music." (I was determined to avoid a colon).
Spent a bunch of time writing about Gubaidulina; now mostly about rap and pedagogy.
A light bulb came on over one student's head: "OHHHHHH... there's a MORAL to this story..."
I assured them that my taxes were done a long time ago...
We go back to work for a bit.
I summed up my predicament to them: "Well, this is a fine mess. I put this off until the last minute, I don't have the instructions, I was planning to take time during class to do it, and the penalties are severe if I turn it in late..."
"Oh yes--it's pretty serious," one of them replied. I grimaced.
"Don't worry. You don't make *that* much money so you probably won't get in that much trouble."
Rude.
One helpful student mentioned that she could put me in touch with her sister, who is an accountant. :)
After a few minutes, I asked, "wait... these are due today, right? I guess I kinda put it off to the last minute. If I don't get it done today, will I get in trouble?"
"This is actually pretty complicated. Do you think I should read the instructions?"
"Oh yes, Dr. Berry!"
"Hm. Ok..." We all get back to work.
"Dr. Berry! Your taxes?!?"
Bless their hearts--no questions asked--they got to work.
I sat at the front of the room pretending to do my taxes, calculator, shuffling papers around, etc. After a few minutes I asked them:
A tax day teaching story!
Once upon a time I went into my 8:00 am Monday morning first-year theory class. It was April 15th.
I handed back last week's graded assignments. "I need you to go over this today. I have something important that I forgot to do."
I waved a 1040 form in front of them.
That reminds me—I have a great tax day teaching story! Will post later.
Substitute teaching has given this professor the opportunity to practice instructional and behavior-management strategies with real students in real schools. @larryferlazzo.bsky.social
a light brown pit bull wearing a maroon shirt sits with her ears pinned back and looks up in our direction. a hand is holding a chewed up certificate in the foreground. the signed certificate is for completion of basic obedience, and it's filled out to Maya la Pitbull. in her obedience class she was taught not to eat homework, but no one said anything about diplomas.
This is Maya. She just graduated from obedience training. May have gotten a little carried away while celebrating. 12/10 (IG: mayalapitbull)
you should discover new music by accident. go to small shows where you haven't heard of most of the artists. dig in the crates of a record store and ask the person working there for a recommendation. ask your friends what's been in their ear recently.
Aren’t they the big LEGO blocks?
Who?
