Bring back? What kind of third rate coffee shops do you have near you that doesn’t have those?

"If Swalwell was guilty, his accusers would file charges" is a thing I keep seeing. But here's the thing: it's absolutely NOT how the system works.
ONLY PROSECUTORS CAN FILE CRIMINAL CHARGES IN THE US LEGAL SYSTEM.
As part of my efforts to combat the COVID Amnesia Project, let's accurately remember what 3 influential laptop class doctors from Stanford said 6 years ago as COVID overflowed hospitals and morgues.
They won't remind you.
I will.
My latest.
THANK YOU
I was listening to BBC Radio 4 on my drive into work this morning & the controversy surrounding Kanye West headlining Wireless Festival was being discussed.
What struck - & disappointed - me was how quickly his abhorrent posts & lyrics were attributed to his mental illness.

A giant red hot burning sun floating over a playground. Everything is tinted red and orange from the heat. The text reads: It’s not always a great day for the playground. Always check for hot playground equipment. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for a child’s skin.
Check your playground equipment before kids play.
The #nca26 reviewer portal requires all divisions to use the same rubric and includes an item that asks the extent to which the submission shows "Connection to Convention Theme." I do not now nor have I ever cared about the theme. I plan on giving every submission 10/10 on this criterion to protest.
A Microsoft login screen asking the user to "Help us beat the robots." The user is instructed to "Use the arrows to move the person until they're standing on the same icon in the left image." Two images are shown, the left a small outline of a symbol and the right a tiny cartoon of a man standing on a path that zigzags and shows tiny different symbols at each turn.
@microsoft.com This was by far the worst "prove you're a human" task I have ever encountered. The picture was tiny and the premise was confusing. I am not substantially less likely to ever login to your system ever again.
I hope to see you there in September.
The “writing is thinking” posting will continue until a single freaking person in Silicon Valley has figured this out
The last edition of this conference was one of the most intellectually exciting conferences I have ever attended. I'm looking forward to September!

Ooh, I love that bookstore. On the rare occasions I am in DC I always stop by.
Do you then complain to them about the children who are always after your Lucky Charms?
1/ 🧵PROCESS Model 4 is the wrong tool to test mediation in an experiment. The c’ path turns prediction into description and prevents falsification. New preprint with @chriscarpenter.bsky.social and @beccafraz.bsky.social at osf.io/preprints/ps... explains why.
I have seen a lot of cursed stuff in my time in academia but this is among the *most* cursed.
Grammarly is generating miniature LLMs based on academic work so that users can have their writing ‘reviewed’ by experts like David Abulafia, who died less than two months ago.
For the start of the year, we thought we'd do a quick update on the journal from launch to date, rather than just the last two months. How are we looking 8 months in? Let's check it out!
So ... for some (ac)counting ...
And that's not left or right or centrist; it's just entitled laziness of the "I would like people have to consider my opinion without considering their or anyone's facts. My opinion has value independent of the facts in the matter" variety.
I think part of the plot is that they were a poorly matched couple inevitably heading to divorce. Perhaps she hated his characters and bits because he used them to deflect so she didn’t pay attention to them.

The Routledge Handbook of Communication and Social Cognition is coming out this month. I was happy to co-author a chapter in it with @hcshulman.bsky.social on the role of cognition and metacognition in persuasion. We join a list of incredible scholars discussing the importance of social cognition 1/
