What really happened at the portrait sitting for American Gothic

I remember Dolly Maders and matching toilet lid covers and mats. But toilet seat covers? With frills? And cistern covers? Nope never seen them in my lifetime.
I’m not sure my life is better for now knowing they exist either. I can smell that toilet from here.
