Thangalaan, I'm sure, will create a rupture in South Indian cinema akin to Hawa from last year (another gravely misunderstood masterpiece), with its dwelling in myth and metaphor. Can't wait to see more glimpses from the film and the film itself.

I've said this earlier, and I'll say it again, Ranjith is perhaps the only true successor to Ritwik Ghatak; his works are some of the most challenging, patience, and attention-demanding from recent times, and that leads to misunderstanding.

There would be no greater disservice to Pa Ranjith than categorizing him as just a "political filmmaker", he is a true cinema artist and one of the remaining few who still seem to care about the cinematic image, in an age where filmmaking has become all about stories and stars.

If Guru Dutt lived till the 2000s and made a melodrama revolving around a dreamy-eyed young man who moves to Calcutta and falls in love, but is always misunderstood by his beloved, he'd've made Sathi.
