Globe showing the Atlantic Ocean with arrows depicting the AMOC circulation: warm surface currents (pink/red) flowing northward from the tropics toward the Arctic, and cold deep return currents (blue/purple) flowing southward. The background shows sea surface temperature trends, with a prominent blue cold patch, the "cold blob", south of Greenland, contrasting with warming (orange/red) across the rest of the ocean.

1/ There's a system of ocean currents in the Atlantic that shapes Europe's #climate, drives monsoons, and keeps sea levels stable along the US coast.

In the last 5 years, the scientific evidence that it could collapse has shifted dramatically.

Most people have no idea. 🧵

Leo: "The message of the church, the message of the gospel -- blessed are the peacemakers. I do not look at my role as being political. I don't want to get into a debate with him. I don't think the message of the gospel is meant to be abused in the way that some people are doing."

As a Christian, I don't think federal agencies should be referring to "Christ, our Savior" in any context. I don't need my government to validate my faith. That's why it's called faith. More importantly, my government shouldn't be invalidating the religions of other Americans.

Happy World Meteorology Day!

As burning of fossil fuels, including in war, swings global climate out of balance - we need to be prepared.

the effects of economic Depression. In Modern Times, he showed a worker driver insane by a single-track occupation on the production line, where machines made robots out of men. In public speeches Chaplin harangued a system that over-produced food, and then destroyed it even though people were starving. He illustrated this in Monsieur Verdoux, where a meek bank clerk goes on a killing spree to provide for his family.
After he had left America, Chaplin wrote, "America has changed. The gigantic scale of industrial institutions, of press, television, and commercial advertising has completely divorced me from the American way of life. I want the other side of the coin, a simpler personal sense of living." These concerns drove the satire of A King in New York.
But Chaplin was also concerned for the soul of America. He said, "[America is] so terribly grim in spite of all the material prosperity. I'm not against materialism but look at what the American kind has done. They no longer know how to weep. Compassion and the old neighbourliness have gone. People stand by and do nothing when friends and neighbours are attacked, libelled, and ruined. The worst thing is what it has done to the children. They are being taught to admire and emulate stool pigeons, to betray and to hate-and all in a sickening atmosphere of religious hypocrisy."

Dear Clifford,
Just a note to let you know how 11fe goes with nahave pited tent here inSultzerland W
breathe more deeply and freely.
hat a Luxury it is, after
11ving 40 years in that God forsaken country of yours - 1t's
11ke just being out of prison.
Europe 1s taking on a new look, both politieally
and culturally, and makes America seem old-fashioned.
Living here gives one a perspective on the body polities of the world and America stands out 11ke a large ugly boil.
However, enough of the unhealthy and the sinister - life in Switzerland is really pleasant and can be anything you want It to be.
One can rub elbous with the illustrious, the the artistio, and politially one can agree to dis-
agree with all of them - so different from the master minded Americans that want to castrate you for having an opinion that differs from theirs.
We have a lovely house on 36 acres overlooking the
charming old town of Vevey where Rousseau and Courbet Lived and worked for a while.
The view of the lake and the distant
mountains 1s ineffably beautiful and the children explore 1t
going through the woods and through the orchards,
oldbing the cherry trees and the peach treee and the plum
trees and the apple trees and the pear trees and what have you.
These sunny days we have lunch in the orchard and you should taste the corn we grow... and the strawberries and the raspberries and the blackeurrants.
And everything is so central; in two hours we
can reach practically any European capital.
I have made
several trips to London and Paris but spend most of my time In Corsier - it 1a really the 1deal country home.
The summer started off poorly but the later part
of it has been delightfully warm and sunny.
Every evening
we dine on the terrace and have been fortunate enough to surround ourselves with very good domestic help, who, I belleve, 11ke us and do everything to make us happy and comfortable.

Thoughts and Ideas.
Beauty is the spirit of all things, an
exaltation, a psalm of life and death, of good and evil, of vileness and purity, of joy and pain, of hate and love -- all of it incarnate in the object we see or hear.
It is an empathy, a feeling into
art or nature that we observe -- all of it a singing harmony to our senses.

We visited the Charlie Chaplin museum in Vevey today, and I was struck by what Chaplin had to say some 70 years ago. (The letter is to Clifford Odets.)

Iran’s people were facing a horrible shortage of water before the war began. If we are destroying desalination plants and setting fire to Teheran we are committing unfathomable crimes.
