Really happy to have played a small part in this cool piece of work led by @guido-valverde.bsky.social and @msabrysarhan.bsky.social. We characterised S. pyogenes in a pre-Columbian Bolivian mummy (suggesting circulation before European contact) #VivaBolivianMummies

Its our favourite day at @microbiologysociety.org #microbio26 #genetics & #genomics. In the poster session at A039 we have our @eh-hayles.bsky.social presenting her hot off the preprint work on the dynamics of Shiga toxin subtype #stx2a in #STEC across England, 2016-2024.

Stimulating keynote from @jojofoth.bsky.social on advancing phage therapy for chronic respiratory infections in cystic fibrosis, addressing key translational challenges from clinical pathways and phage biobanking to delivery, diagnostics, and public engagement at #Microbio26.
Come and see my posters at #microbio26 A034 and A035 to hear all about my work with transposon sequencing, DNA supercoiling and location-based transcriptional potential, or come to chat about the impact of location on antimicrobial phenotype and fitness!
What a wonderful start to @microbiologysociety.org #microbio26 with an interactive session on celebrating & promoting actions advancing #EDI followed by @prideinmicro.bsky.social lecture on From visibility to belonging. Its been wonderful to see this network grow. Read more here: microb.io/4mnraQc
Excited to share our latest publication from the PhageLand project which investigated the effects of a phage cocktail, designed for wastewater bioremediation, on Daphnia magna microbiome and life-history parameters! 🌊💧

I won't be attending the annual Microbiology Society meeting this year. Can't be everywhere all the time, as much I would love to learn about all the cool new science and hang out with all the lovely people there. Keep up the posts so I know who's papers to read next :D.
#Microbio26
Just about able to watch...🫣
I have to thank @gabastorga.bsky.social for reminding me how important it is to keep being an active role model for others. I remember meeting Gab at my 1st importance of diversity in science talk & so pleased to see how far we & research culture have come in that time
Deadline is April 20th! Let’s get those viruses
Whenever I presented Phold, I was frequently asked "can you do the same beyond phages?" We ( @oschwengers.bsky.social @linsalrob.bsky.social @binomicalabs.org et al) finally did it with Baktfold github.com/gbouras13/ba... www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
And in biology writing use “humans” not “man”, “humankind” not “mankind”, etc.
Words matter; biases/assumptions are sustained. If you don’t believe that, just remember how many people can”t solve the surgeon riddle…
Today, MSF is going public with something we've been fighting behind closed doors for months: Gilead will not sell us their new HIV drug, lenacapavir.
The sticking point isn't even price, they just refuse to sell.

Not all #Salmonella equal in terms of infection risk!
By combining population #genomics & global datasets, we identify lineage-specific markers linked to human infection - including a conserved prophage in S. Agona🦠
This highlights the potential for genomics-informed risk prediction in food safety
Only 9 days left to apply for this post doctoral position. Please share and forward to your colleagues.
It is a pleasure to announce the 4th UK MGE workshop will be in York on 23rd-24th June 2026! Registration is free and we are actively looking for contributors. Interested? If so, please register via the website and select the talk option

We look forward to seeing you in York!
Our @statnews.com survey of NIH-funded researchers drew nearly 1,000 responses from 45 states (plus DC and Puerto Rico). Here's a short thread on 5 scientists' whose labs and lives have been deeply impacted by federal policies 🧵
Nice work, Alan, Nina, Willem and colleagues!
If you're interested in looking at the prophages, let me know ;)
Really excited that this paper has come out in @lancetmicrobe.bsky.social, collaboration led by @alanmcn1.bsky.social and Nina van Sorge (@amsterdamumc.bsky.social)

Oh, that's what's happening.
Evolution incoming!🦠 Langridge Lab and co from @quadraminstitute.bsky.social are at Norwich Science Festival today hosting Evolve, Survive, Thrive! 🧬 Can you work out what bacteria need to survive in the human gut? Or how about under the sea? Come and see if you can create the ultimate survivor! 👩🔬
We introduced an apprenticeship role in our communications team @quadraminstitute.bsky.social
last year and Clemence has been an absolute star. Giving people opportunities and professional training is a win-win for everyone. 👀 👇
If you use AI tools to prepare your manuscript, check it very closely. Erroneous references are significantly undermining my confidence in people I once had faith in. This isn't just fabrications, it's also when reference titles are changed by automatic language editing.
Very proud of you, squad!
Great first day of VoM-UK 2026, including three top presentations from the @evelienadri.bsky.social lab (I am only a bit biased) ( @xenadyball.bsky.social @rapher97.bsky.social @deuskamya.bsky.social ) #IDoBelieveInPhages
Well done, @ryancook94.bsky.social!
It is a really cool project that I was happy to support.
🆕 Researchers carrying out the first major study of the viral component of the respiratory microbiome in patients with COPD found its diversity declines with severity of the condition.
