ICYMI. My NY Times Sunday print edition op ed on Big Oil's effort to get the same Congressional immunity shield given to gun manufacturers. Instead, Big Oil should be held accountable financially for its contribution to climate driven losses. www.nytimes.com/2026/04/13/o...

@cadavejones.bsky.social, upon being (deservedly!) honored as one of the "50 People Shaping our Society in 2026": “In the long run, if we don’t address the root cause [of the insurance crisis], which is the substantial amount of emissions from fossil fuels, insurance will no longer be available.”
In the wake of historic flooding, Hawaiʻi could soon become the first state in the nation to take tangible steps to make Big Oil cover the growing costs of climate change, rather than letting them be passed onto the public via higher home insurance premiums. climateintegrity.org/news/view/ha...
Unfun Friday news dump: new GOP bill would put Big Oil above the law, letting them off the hook for decades of deceiving the public and banning anyone from trying to hold them accountable in court. climateintegrity.org/news/view/br...
Big CA study allocating costs from catastrophic wildfires has glaring omission. No discussion of holding Big Oil accountable for their substantial contribution to the crisis. Instead of shifting deck chairs on Titanic, need to pass SB 982. My SFChron op ed today: www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/open...
"Gun Manufacturers Won the Ultimate Legal Shield. Big Oil Wants That, Too." #Opinion from Dave Jones, director of the Climate Risk Initiative at @cleeberkeley.bsky.social and former California Insurance Commissioner www.nytimes.com/2026/04/13/o...
re: Affordability Discourse. Inflation data is only picking up ~half the recent (climate change-driven) spike in home insurance rates. Itʻs no wonder people are more pissed off about the state of the economy than egghead economists and @whstancil.bsky.social say they should be.
"There (are) going to be more climate-related disasters in the future. Someone's gonna have to pay for it, and I think [the oil companies] should be held accountable."
If Big Oil were given total legal immunity, "it would be an injustice with lasting and cascading harm," writes @cadavejones.bsky.social.
"The public would keep paying for the costs of climate change, while the fossil fuel companies most responsible for them would continue to pay nothing."
"If Big Oil were to secure immunity from liability for climate damage, the public would keep paying for the costs of climate change, while the fossil fuel companies most responsible for them would continue to pay nothing." @cadavejones.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/2026/04/13/o...

Map of U.S., from coolwx.com, showing locations currently experiencing record-breaking temperatures. There are countless such locations in the Western U.S., with hundreds of red dots (locations breaking daily record highs) and many dozens of pink dots (locations breaking March monthly record highs). The region of record heat extends from the Pacific Coast to the Great Plains, and from Canada to Mexico.
Well, if yesterday's map was ridiculous, I'm running out of superlatives to characterize today's. Countless locations from Pacific Coast to Great Plains are currently experiencing all-time record March warmth, w/ some locations approaching/exceeding April (or even May) records.

It's time to do disaster-informed zoning!
