What language do you wish your school had for talking through tough tech decisions?

Weβre not going to magically come to a consensus on outcomes, but we can start with a consensus on how we reason together: shared vocabulary and processes, explicit values and norms, and transparent and shared decision-making.
This is obviously not the only split in stakeholders, and weβre seeing similar mis-matched opinions throughout the educational decision-making process.
A survey they cite found that more than half of students who use AI for coursework have mixed feelings, saying it helps sometimes but makes them think less deeply and about 1/5 students reported using AI to write full essays.
And a professor at an HBCU is encouraging responsible use while co-creating a course examining how AI impacts communities of African descent globally.
NPR shared some anecdotes on this: An English professor compared using AI to write essays to bringing a forklift to the gym, but a student said she uses AI to outline and organize. Another student uses AI tutoring because she can't make office hours.
Currently, students, professors, and institutions are each writing their own AI rulebook, and they don't really agree. Shared language can turn that conflict into collaboration.

For those wanting resources to start asking the right questions, pre-ordering includes access to downloadable discussion guides at ethicaledtech.org.
We start by asking the right questions together with a common language.
When districts pays for AI platforms where teachers save time, students build relationships with chatbots, wealthier schools get more accurate models, and parents discover they can't opt out. How do we balance that clash of principles?
In my upcoming book, I introduce five principles borrowed from bioethics and adapted for education to help us frame our ethical problems: Beneficence, Non-maleficence, Autonomy, Care, & Justice
We keep defaulting to the same question: "Does this tool work?" But, that question is incomplete.
