But, communities are fighting back
Across the country, local leaders are opposing DHS’s plans, warning of human rights abuses, infrastructure strain, and economic harm:

Roxbury, New Jersey: The majority-Republican township council voted unanimously to oppose a planned 1,500-capacity warehouse.

Washington County, Maryland: A federal judge has temporarily blocked ICE from converting a warehouse into a detention center after the state of Maryland sued.

Proposed warehouses could transform entire towns
The capacity of some of DHS’s proposed warehouses would dwarf the population of local towns.
Tremont, Pennsylvania
The proposed warehouse detention camp would grow the population of Tremont, PA from 1,672 to 9,172 –
a nearly 450% increase.
These plans would overwhelm local infrastructure like zoning, sewage, and emergency services.

Despite this, ICE has provided little to no coordination with local officials.

What’s in the plan: large-scale detention facilities 7,000 - 10,000 people EACH Eight proposed “mega-centers” would cage people for up to 60 days. The size would be much larger than any existing immigration detention facility.

ICE plans to buy out 10 sites where its Enforcement and Removal Operations are already operating and use them to further balloon ICE-owned detention capacity.

“Like Prime, but for human beings”: Inside the Trump administration’s plan to lock up tens of thousands of people in Amazon-style warehouses

What’s happening: Last April, ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons said he wanted to see an immigration detention system that runs “like Prime, but for human beings.” For months, DHS has been pursuing plans to cage people in dozens of massive warehouses across the country in what they’re calling their “Detention Reengineering Initiative.”

As of April 1, it was reported that Sec. Mullin paused the purchasing of new warehouses. However, we can't afford to stop organizing against this massive threat life, due process, and democracy. Here’s how

Immigrants seeking asylum are ordered to countries they've never been to, but end up stuck in limbo In recent months, thousands of immigrants living legally in the U.S. and waiting for rulings on their asylum claims were suddenly ordered deported to countries where most have no ties.

Why is the Trump admin trying to deport an Afghan man to Uganda, a Venezuelan mother to Ecuador, or 13K other asylum seekers to places where they have NO ties?

To scare them into giving up asylum cases while they await decisions. https://bit.ly/4m9vpyD

Habeas Corpus is Saving Immigrants from Medical Neglect Countless people are receiving inadequate medical and mental health care while in ICE detention, with habeas corpus their only strategy for medical support.

For many detained immigrants facing medical neglect, habeas corpus is the only escape.

Since Trump's second term began, filings have skyrocketed, and attorneys are fighting for people one petition at a time.

The ruling preserves critical safeguards: the right to speak with a parent, relative, or attorney before being pressured to sign forms waiving legal rights.

Young children are uniquely vulnerable. These protections are both foundational to ensuring due process and moral matters of human decency.

Should immigrant workers and families file a federal tax return?
Many working people have a legal requirement to file federal taxes. Anyone who does not have to file under federal law may want to talk to an immigration attorney to weigh the risks and benefits of filing taxes in light of their future plans.

The bottom line: for anyone with an active immigration case, who has an ITIN or who has filed taxes recently with their current address, and who owes federal taxes, filing a tax return would not provide the IRS with any new information, while not doing so could have negative consequences. How should immigrant taxpayers think about the risks in applying for or renewing an ITIN? The answer depends upon each person’s situation:

Those considering applying for an ITIN should decide whether they might plan in the future to adjust their immigration status. A record of paying federal taxes when required to do so will likely be an important factor, while an interruption in paying taxes may count against an applicant.

Those considering whether to apply for an ITIN for the first time should factor in whether they are legally required to file taxes and weigh the risks of providing their address to the IRS.These are general guidelines, not legal advice.

How do people without a Social Security Number file taxes? People who are not eligible for a Social Security Number can get an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) from the IRS.

An ITIN does not provide any immigration status, authorize working, or provide access to benefits like Social Security. An ITIN may be a useful form of identification for other reasons (such as opening a bank account or getting a driver’s license in some states). These are general guidelines, not legal advice.

Who is legally required to pay taxes?Everyone living in the United States, including undocumented immigrants, is required to file taxes if they meet the minimum income requirements.

For employees, an employer may “withhold” (or take out) income tax from their paycheck and pay it to the IRS in their name. This is true even if they work under another person’s Social Security Number.

Even if people are self-employed, all businesses and independent contractors are still required to file a tax return and pay taxes on their earnings, so long as they meet the income requirements. These are general guidelines, not legal advice.

WA asylum seekers detained over questionable violations Recent court rulings show how ICE is citing missed immigration check-ins — often without evidence — to detain asylum seekers

Wilfredo arrived at his routine check-in only to be arrested by ICE officers without explanation.

He spent 11 months in an ICE detention center—a place he described as "really, really awful."

No one should have to fear being detained at their immigration appointment.
