The Two Matts Q&A: the fall of Orban, Corbyn [picture of Corbyn]

Matt Kelly effectively calling for the UK to join witiout FoM.

Some facts, M Kelly. There are no barriers being put up to FoM across the union. You really need to get your facts straight.

If anything, FoM has never been stronger.

As the PM’s fate lay in doubt, Labour MPs plotted the party’s future direction Former ministers rounded on government’s fiscal rules and called for new policies on tax and the economy

This makes no sense at all:

"While the dominance of the fiscal rules left them tied to pledges not to raise income tax or national insurance."

Nothing in the fiscal rules stops the government from putting up taxes!

There's a really simple way to remove the red tape and bureaucracy that is holding back British businesses. We have the largest trading bloc in the world on our doorstep: we should skip the baby steps, and just rejoin the single market.

UK agriculture deal with EU will not remove all red tape, peers told Lords told sales of Scottish shellfish among areas that may benefit – but agreement will not erase all paperwork

As long as the HoC & HoL still invite Shanker Singham for evidence / advice, nothing will change.

Latest Shanker:
- Fuck your exports because of the Brexit we advised
- Claim this creates a huge buyer's advantage
- Use this as leverage in trade talks as we hold all the cards

The underlying structural problems of UK politics that the country doesn't have the resources to do everything expected of it and a Westminster class in denial about this doesn't go away in the event of a new PM.

Add to this that UK politics as a whole has become more insular and secretive almost to hide the trade-offs that became ever more obvious after Brexit - and for Starmer's single biggest failing was not bringing any new approach to government that might change this.

What role did the BBC play in the UK’s transition to the metric system in the 1970s? It may come as a surprise to many readers that, 50 years ago, the BBC had an Inter-divisional Metrication Committee. It’s precise remit is not clear, but in 1976 it published a 68-page bookle…

We have complained to the BBC about their outdated use of imperial units many times. Unbelievably, they still have no coherent policy on the subject.

metricviews.uk/2026/03/26/w...

In the 1970s, they did publish guidance for producers - but for internal use only.

Cannabis resin was always sold in pounds and ounces (and maybe it still is, Idk) but cocaine (and other powders) were always (and probably still are, Idk) weighed up in grams and kilos.

Also in the UK, carpet width is by the meter while (yes, you guessed it) length can be by the foot. 🤦‍♂️

I wish it had stayed that way, too! I hope the HoL laughed in his face re his "we have a huge buyers advantage because we destroyed our exports" nonsense.

In fact, I hope they chased him out with pitchforks.

Negotiate massive checks on all goods. Fail to implement said checks, unlike your neighbours who manage from day 1. Their checks mean your exports crash creating an even bigger trade imbalance than the one Brexit was meant to fix. This gives you a huge buyers advantage & leverage in talks. Winning!

Or in the FT. Because it's a deeply stupid point.

UK nominal GDP has overtaken India, probably temporarily, and driven entirely by exchange rate fluctuations (mostly the fall of the rupee, which has indeed been "sensational").

We have not grown faster than India - quite the opposite.

It's a decent list. But far too many howlers are missing. Like claiming how the Continental Army took over the airports from the Brits in the Revolutionary War in the 1770s, or injecting disinfectant against COVID.

On top of everything else, the level of 'embattled' behaviour going on with senior ministers and their comfort zone of lashing out of their traditional supporters shows the government is both in disarray and denial.

Indeed, and those who find the Home Secretary's policies too restrictive have made similar criticisms of Noem and ICE, and of comparable restrictions by the EU/its Member States, usually adopted by white politicians too
