One of the main reasons I ❤️ Utrecht is that I feel safe biking anywhere in the city AND the government works hard every year to make getting around by bike even better.
It's a sharp contrast to biking in America (and, frankly, most places in the world). It's time to change the world.

It’s fucking bizarre how people are acting like something from 2022 is something they can’t live without.
Like dudes, the emotional dependence on a sycophantic machine regurgitating nonsense to encourage you to stop engaging in critical thought and trust the slop is truly depressing to witness.

The brand new Makers store, black store sign over an open front with black and white balloons outside it
A sign with "Pete's Press Book Shop", also featuring cartoon cats and the top row of books
The shelves full of books pre-opening day
Our books are available at the new Makers store, in the Cornwall Centre, #yqr! It may be mini for now, but it's the only bookseller in the mall!! 25+ titles over many different genres, and everyone local!

“The private motor vehicle is the most health-harming mode of personal transportation, both individually and societally. It is also inequitable, particularly within our cities and towns..”

Omg.
“In London cyclists now outnumber cars in the City by 2 to 1. Paris, where they now outnumber motorists across the whole city, is catching up with Europe’s traditional bike capitals, Amsterdam & Copenhagen…In Copenhagen, bikes account for almost half of commuter trips to work/school.” @economist.com
A round birthday cake with green icing and the Pete's Press logo (a tuxedo cat sitting with an.open.book and a white coffee cup) in the centre
It's our second birthday!! Two years of #indie publishing!

guys, bluesky is dying. if we don't start getting more likes, a greedy developer will bulldoze the site to put up a parking garage. the only thing that can save it is for a ragtag crew of misfits to put on one last big concert at the community center.
Glen Harper's new nonfiction book titled The Homeless, a personal journey of discovery
When Glen Harper arrived in Toronto he came with a single purpose: to learn how people who live without shelter survive in Canada’s largest city. This is a detailed, first-hand account from a man who voluntarily became homeless to record the truth for himself.

A petrol station list of fuel prices with a bike at the bottom with 0000 for the fuel price.
Hey! This looks interesting. One of our Pete's Press authors, Glen Harper, is debating whether to start his own political party, very old school socialist. He also wrote a novel about unions. petes-press.square.site/product/the-...
I'll pass this on to him!
Autobesity
Oh good for her taking a stand!! Just such a shame that it's *still* an issue.
Here (Regina) we don't even get the painted lanes. My son (15) loves biking and could realistically cycle to school in 15mins. Except it's so damn dangerous that he has to take a 40 minute journey on 2 buses instead.
Turns out where I had my first serious bike crash last year is an area where the local councillor is acutely aware of the dangers but prioritizes parking over safety.
Colour me surprised...
Yes! Sorry, Jones Ave. I was heading from Danforth to Queen St, I know that much. But it was steep (from my flatland perspective) and the bike lane was just paint on the road.
(Should qualify this by saying I'm from saskatchewan and haven't cycled down hills in about 15 yrs) Was freewheeling down Jones St and someone opened their car door into me. Those bike share bikes don't come with helmets! To his credit, driver looked more terrified than I was & called an ambulance
No Kings only trains
Happy to have contributed to this, even if it did once end in concussion....

Point being: why oh why is Vancouver so much more than anywhere else? The weekend AFTER Easter as well.
Planned shoestring-budget city breaks this year.
Toronto in January: flights=$238, hostel for 3 nights, $240
Vancouver in April: flights= $348, airbnb for 3 nights= $354
Winnipeg, May: (driving+) $400 for 3 nights
Calgary, August: flights$220 hostel for 3 nights:$160
Cannot figure out Montreal!
An excellent source of free wing mirrors, that.
Also incentivized rents for start ups. Committing to 3-5 year lease at ~$2500 a month (average for Regina commercial leases) is prohibitively risky for indie businesses. A city-owned huge building filled with mini businesses (AND AN APPROVED COMMERCIAL KITCHEN) with rent control would be amazing!
Mock up of the Makers storefront in the Cornwall mall, Regina. Pink banner across the top saying "storefront". The unit is under the big stone pillars of the original bank building inside the mall.
Big News:
WE HAVE A (mini) STOREFRONT OPENING! (Sort of)
#Makers is opening in Regina, in the Cornwall Centre in mid-April.
The store focuses on indie small businesses and locally-made goods. Pete’s Press fits the bill!
So, all our books will be stocked in a bricks and mortar store finally!
Perimenopausal sleep deprived urge to move to Toronto.
Fortunately I then look around me and remember I actually quite like eating and owning my house.
No one asked for it, but when has that ever stopped the current gen of technosociopaths?
