Andy & AJ will take a look at S2E11, A Matter of Life and Death.
We talk about things like the death of Francois, how we want Victor the baker to be our uncle, and whether Max did intend on betraying Lifeline in the end. Or did circumstances force him to act? 🧐

@andypodding.bsky.social what I love about AZ Drama is the niche series covered. Quiller, Rockliffes Babies, Lotus Eaters, Partners in Crime. alongside occasional #DistinctNostalga podcasts.
Nice to hear. Currently thinking about another podcast collaboration.
Dear listeners to ‘Down the Line: a Secret Army podcast’ @secretarmypod.bsky.social - this week we will be recording our review of the finale of Series 2: Day of Wrath (the one in which Gestapo HQ is attacked by an avenging evader from the air). To accompany our episode on S2E10, Guests at God’s Table, we have a special interview with Keith Jayne and Rachel Beasley!
Keith played Wym and Rachel played Marie-Claire.
It was fascinating to chat about their experiences as child actors in 70s/80s.

I’ve spent all day gardening with you and @jeffgoddard@bsky.social in my ears - first three instalments of your season 18 commentaries - and have had the best time. Thank you, thank you! Xx
Don’t wait around growing old! Go listen to Rod, Jeff and I talking about parts 3 and 4 of The Leisure Hive.
Tomorrow, we’re getting a bit prickly…
She would have been magnificent but I couldn’t see her saying yes to more sci-fi after her B7 experience.
Another Secret Army casting that nearly happened: Juliet as the Chimeron Queen!
Indeed Denis is rather sexy as Sir George - Clifford probably less so!
Ooh didn’t know that
And Jacques Bol!
A famously ‘terrible’ series that according to Clifford was largely sunk by Terry Wogan’s biting reviews. I’ve seen bits and was not impressed. Clifford hoped it might help him build on his success in Secret Army but it was not to be. Still, it kept him busy before Kessler’s return.
Never really understood what Natalie saw in Francois - he is a pretty insipid and undeveloped character and I am a little surprised he was allowed to be so active within Lifeline.
Max on the other hand seems to go through a real crisis - a bit like Brutus in Julius Caesar but in reverse
His mission has always been to betray them but he seems to genuinely rate the Lifeline regulars (and doesn't seem to have a high opinion of his communist allies). It's the complexity that means, like Albert and Kessler, we can't see him as a 'goody' or 'baddy' - exactly why Secret Army is so good
And that ending!!!
Please tell us your thoughts on S2E11, A Matter of Life and Death, by Sat 28th Feb and we’ll read it out on the show! Thanks!
Story: Francois ignores advice and attempts to co-ordinate several sets of airmen by himself - with tragic results.
There are communists. And Duncan Lamont guest stars!
Have you listened to our most recent episode yet, about S2E10 Guest’s at God’s Table?
This is the Christmasy one with the orphan children!

Next ep - S2E9 Little Old Lady- is out this Saturday!

We discuss the writing, direction, performances, scenes in the script that didn’t make it onto screen, and this brilliant moment where Natalie takes Max’s beer! 😂
