a man standing in a hallway with his hands on his hips and says godspeed Alt: Ron Swanson from Parks and Rec is shown in a hallway wearing a purple long sleeved shirt and brown pants and a backpack. He has brown hair, a moustache, and no eyebrows. He looks off into the distance and says 'Godspeed' before running away.

Great to have Masai Ujiri in Ottawa yesterday.

Through his work with Giants of Africa, the UN, and global partners, Masai is helping to strengthen Canada’s partnerships — while empowering and supporting Black communities across Canada.

I guess it's fitting that it's a reimagined, worse version of someone else's artwork

6,000 faculty members at Penn State has filed for a union.

These professors and other faculty will vote on unionizing in the coming year.

If they win their union it will be the largest public union in Pennsylvania.

I say this as someone whose entire job is finding the narrow use cases in which AI is actually useful:

All the fear about AI, all the reluctance to adopt it, is entirely legitimate, and a product of the fact that it's been foisted on the public with no consideration of its negative externalities.

This is unreal. The 2026 code4lib conference has been cancelled unilaterally by Carnegie Mellon University because the Department of Education raised issues with the diversity scholarships:

I feel like pregnant people should just get month 8 and 9 off from work. It's just too much effort to exist in the working world and you're really not a functioning human.

I agree! I also find it utterly frustrating when fans (& foe!) of AI talk about how "it's evolving so quickly" as though someone pressed a button once & it's been doing its own thing ever since.

AI is not sentient or even intelligent. Human beings are pushing the technology to do more, more, more.

Just a friendly reminder that DEI isn't just an acronym that you include in your job ads or tack onto a committee. It's created and reinforced by actions and behaviour, whether that happens in public places or behind the scenes ones.

The Girl Guides of Canada have been an explicitly and intentionally feminist organization since the 1990s. I'm glad that they are continuing to stand on feminist and inclusive principles.

There is always some anxiety from my LIS students about finding a job.

This semester though... I've had more questions about the job market than ANY OTHER TOPIC...

What advice would you give new librarians, trying to find their first post-MLS job, in 2025/2026?

This is mind-boggling. And sad.

And honestly explains so much about what's happening in the US.

I come by my “ethics of refusal” honestly: the way I feel about AI now is the way my Dad understood the problematics of the now largely abandoned fuel-ethanol industry. It’s bad science, bad policy, and bad faith all around.

World Series in Toronto: What a Blue Jays win would mean to Canadians Whether they’re screaming at TVs in Calgary or honking horns in Brampton, Blue Jays fans are already imagining what a World Series victory - the first in 32 years - would feel like.

The Blue Jays have united Canadians across the country. Here is what a World Series win would mean to some of them

I've been feeling burned out and exhausted lately with work and life and haven't had much time to make new comedy stuff, but the Blue Jays winning last night in the most "Jays" way possible felt even better than watching Poilievre lose his riding and having to pretend to care about rural Alberta
