I just put out the first neglected science story out that came from this post. It is about hints of a possible UV-C photoreceptor. You can find it at plantenzo.substack.com/p/are-plants...

Are plants sensing UV-C or not A neglected science story about how UV-C induced stress experiments opened up suggestions that there might be an UV-C photoreceptor

It took a while but here is the story that I wrote up about that possible UV-C photoreceptor

Like your thoughts on this:
1) What do you think of the paper and 2) Are we underestimating guard cell metabolism as a breeding target?

Guard cell photorespiration controls stomata behavior and development Photorespiration is traditionally viewed as a limitation to photosynthetic efficiency. However, it is mandatory for safeguarding the Calvin–Benson–Bassham cycle from inhibitory byproducts through Ru...

Liked this new paper about how photorespiration influence stomata. In short: they tweaked a single single photorespiratory enzyme (PGLP1) only in guard cells and found that it changes whole-plant growth, gas exchange and stomatal size.

My question is 1) what do you think of this study? And 2) How do you think it will change your own research?

1 month ago 0 0 2 0

They found 2,3 million cis-regulatory sequences in plants. Before this the major regulators of gene expression in plants were believed to be the promoters. Now the researchers of the study show that these cis-regulatory sequences possible have an even bigger influence on gene expression.

Sometimes you come across a study which you quickly realise it is going to have a big impact. The last week published study "A deep-time landscape of plant cis-regulatory sequence evolution" in science I think is one of those.

Still the main suggestion holds, at least for carrot cells, that there is a receptor that senses wavelenghts of 260nm, which is not further investigated.
When I have time I will do some more digging and write a post about it.
Thanks

The other candidate, not comming from Gareth Jenkins is this one onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1... Which does suggests there is a receptor that senses 260nm.

UV-B, UV-A, and blue light signal transduction pathways interact synergistically to regulate chalcone synthase gene expression in Arabidopsis - PubMed UV and blue light stimulate transcription of key flavonoid biosynthesis genes in a range of higher plants. Here, we provide evidence that several distinct "inductive" and "synergistic" UV/blue phototransduction pathways regulate chalcone synthase (CHS) gene transcription and transcript accumulation …

Could not find any paper of Gareth Jenkins that mentioned the 260nm the closest I got was this one pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8989887/

An extra UV photoreceptor would indeed be interresting to find.

The earliest paper from Gareth Jenkins is this one from 2001: nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1046/...
Does the suggestion come from this paper?

Extra bonus points if you can tell why the particular study/discovery is interesting and deserves more of attention.

A recent comment made me wonder which studies have you done, or come across that are now neglected, orphaned, or otherwise ignored and you now feel can do with a little bit of love and attention.
