The Hacker News tarpit This newsletter is free to read, and it’ll stay that way. But if you want more - extra posts each month, no sponsored CTAs, access to the community, and a direct line to ask me things - paid subscript...

But don’t take my word for it. Go read Joan. www.joanwestenberg.com/the-hacker-n...

It always has been. A Claude subscription will only get you so far while deskilling you in the process. And it might be even harder now. Attention is razor thin and people have lost trust in tech thanks to the techno-oligarchs.

“You can build anything over a weekend.” God, I hate that line. Building is the easy part. Finding a real problem, solving it the right way, and making the economics work so you can keep going. That’s the actual work.

15+ years ago I yelled in anger to my startup cofounder: “The code on your computer is worth nothing. Go out and sell it.” Harsh, but it’s always been true.

Maybe my concept of meaningful work and yours are not the same. Maybe we should start with that.

Eight years of wanting, three months of building with AI For eight years, I’ve wanted a high-quality set of devtools for working with SQLite. Given how important SQLite is to the industry1, I’ve long been puzzled that no one has invested in building a reall...

@offprint.app is insanely good for a first release. I was literally mid-plan on building my own blog. Still might. But it's really hard to justify when this exists. Might just throw them an annual sub and start writing. Kudos to the team!

Forever grateful to @mamuso.dev for taking a chance on me and to @gloria.design for being an incredible manager, I wouldn't have done this without either of you.

After 5 intense years at GitHub shipping security tools and Copilot Metrics, I'm closing this chapter. Taking a sabbatical first, then back to building something of my own. I couldn't name everyone who made this, but you know who you are, and you made it worth every bit. I'll miss you all.

Meditation, Language, and LLMs — Roden newsletter issue 112 The resolution of a human is much higher than we think

“I also think we’ve long ascribed meaning to the wrong activities. So it’s a good time to start meditating, to spend a few afternoons talking about what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and maybe what you’d rather be doing.” craigmod.com/roden/112/

Turns out your Pokémon Go data will be used to train robots Pokémon Go scanning data will now help robots deliver pizza in time

Sorry to break it to you, you weren’t lied to. You sold that data to Niantic, the same way you buy in-game goods, and now they can do whatever they want with it.

So let me get this straight. You work 9-to-5, earn a salary, and spend some of it on a loot box for virtual goods. Then you play a game, scan your environment, earn those same virtual goods as payment, and now you’re mad because you “worked for free”? All while you agreed to this in the EULA.
