Not like Travis. Travis clapped their hands to their mouth, stunned into silence for the last time in their life. If anyone had been listening carefully, underneath their pounding hearts and the grinding organ music coming from everywhere-and-nowhere, they'd have heard the elastic *snap* of a mind pushed one degree past its outer limit - but they *all* heard the tremulous peals of laughter which ripped their way out of Travis' throat. "*HA!*" In that moment the sound was more grotesque than a gunshot - the others' attention snapped on Travis, all of their faces twisted up reproachfully. But for all their shyness, all their shame, Travis couldn't hold back the second laugh, and more after that - first slipping, then streaming, each laugh tuning up to be louder and deeper and of a fuller character than the last. They raked at their mouth, hands locked tight over their lips, but the dam had already burst. In the length of a song, Travis' laugh developed from their faint mousy titter into a husky, voluminously petaled alto - the voice of a soprano, which their tiny body could only contain so long: the others watched, wide-eyed, as Travis began to transform. With every belt of rising laughter, the poor fool's neck gave one precipitous *jerk*, twisting this way and the other like invisible hands were wringing them out; and where their bones ought have cracked, instead they whined like polyester and stretched longer - longer than any neck they'd ever seen, until Travis' head was a whole wrist-length over their shoulders and they couldn't reach their mouth anymore. After that the laughter flowed free, a coursing river of manic whooping guffaws repressed for their whole quiet lifetime. Their skin wore threadbare and split open, and polyps of color sprang up from the wounds: beanbag scabs painted yellow and brown, bright and colorful like the carnival. Travis dropped to their knees and tried to beg; all that came out was a laughter so loud it swallowed the others' screams.
