Some twelve year olds are not carefree kids or rebellious teens. They are young people who have been forced to be functional adults for years, in twelve year old bodies. They have responsibilities. And that often means they need their phones.

Sad that I speak from experience.

Will never forget when my phone was confiscated at secondary school because I got a phone call telling me a family member was in the hospital, and this meant I had caring responsibilities. Told them and school still insisted on taking it off me even though I needed to, you know, do that caring.

Disabled kids, kids with complex home lives, kids who are carers, all sorts of other kids marginalised by our school system are going to be further excluded by this

Of course to this horrible authoritarian government they'll also see that as a win

A total ban on phones in schools is a completely batshit, over the top, policy which shows, yet again, how out of touch Labour is with the reality of many people's lives. This will be totally unworkable for many people, including young carers as mentioned below. #r4today
