To find urls you can use a regex like this: (https?:\/\/)?(www\.)?[a-zA-Z0-9.-]+\.[a-zA-Z]{2,}(/.*)?

Yes you can!
You have just to create a workflow with the transformation you want (replace . With [.]) and then on workflow options set to apply workflow only to text that match to regex.
On regex field set a regex than match web urls.
