I have a four boating of an America in my children’s or grandchildren’s time - when the United States is a service or information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those and authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good, and what’s true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness. The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media. The 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially, a kind of celebration of ignorance.

Dear Santa: When I was a child, my father cheated on my Mom. Later, my parents divorced. Soon after, my mother died in a car accident My brother and I could only live in my grandma's old house. Grandma's sister was an alcoholic. The whole family lived on my grandma's savings. Grandma recently died. My Uncle Andy is barely keeping himself out of jail from day to day. My brother left home and won't talk to us any more. Dad, now 74, had to go out to work to support the family and eventually he is going to want me to do the same thing. Yours sincerely. I've spent 16 years doing independent theatre, and at the best of times, I broke even. I wish I could've done 48 plays by now, instead of (my current) 24. Poor ain't bad if you prove to your friends you're worth a damn.
