In Italy, the federal tax is about $3.25 per gallon. You don't see people commuting to work there in otherwise empty Chevy Suburbans, as is so often the case in the US. The federal tax in the US should be much higher. Many American bridges are at risk of collapse due to lack of repair/funding.

Gas taxes are the source of funds for building/maintaining roads. The federal tax is a pathetic 18.4 cents per gallon, and already Senator Kelly has proposed suspending the tax (that is, de-funding roads/bridges) because of the war's effect on gas prices.
