It seems to me like a lot of people haven't followed the details of why folks have issues with Substack, and basically assume that leaving the platform for moral or social reasons just automatically means giving up money.

But I don't think that's supported by the actual math.

Probably one of the most cutest birds I ever saw! 🟢⚪️🔵🟣🔴

The Cuban Tody (Todus multicolor), one of the most colorful birds in the Caribbean, only ten centimeters long with a bright red throat, emerald green and a pinkish belly.

I cannot be more serious about anything than when I tell you that you absolutely must move your writing off of Substack.

There are too many excellent platforms (with better $$ structures) for you to keep your work connected with the vile trash that Substack is happy to promote.

"AI is garbage, bro, it gives you wrong answers like half the time and the other half the time makes you stupid."

Overheard a middle schooler chastising a fellow student for suggesting they use AI. Whole middle school herd started mocking the AI kid.

...We need to let these kids at the tech bros.

I'm telling you, the solution to many problems in education is to hire school librarians (at a liveable wage, with administrative support, and adequate resources). Your students don't need an LLM, they need a librarian.

(Also, fantasy as a genre outsold science fiction by about four to one, and romance outsold fantasy by nearly two to one, so there's some perspective for you.)

Well, it's all fantasy, it's just some of it has wands and some of it has laser guns, and often the main difference between their tools is whether they work via an allegedly rational basis or through the benefice of the gods. So I don't mind it being thought of as a large single category.

Just an absolute vacuum cleaner, sucking cash out of the company while leaving its creative teams and executives begging for scraps. Zero added value to one of the greatest brands in Hollywood history.

(also TECHNICALLY speaking, all fiction is fantasy, people seem to hate it when you mention that though)

This was me, all day yesterday. Even though I knew that shitler would TACO, all the memories of my physically abusive father and emotionally abusive mother came flooding back. I was on the edge of dysregulation all day.

I imagine I'm not the only one who is tired today as a result. I see you.

It’s Time To Grow Up | Defector HBO’s new Harry Potter TV series is premiering this Christmas Day. Under current plans, it will last at least a decade. The trailer looks like the original films were run through an AI generator, but ...

“It is beneath my dignity to let myself be run over by any trolley, and particularly this trolley, burdened as it is by a cape and a stupid hat.”

I wrote for Defector about boycotting Harry Potter, the ‘safe’, kindly face of anti-trans politics:

Reminder that the moon that orbits the Earth has a name in English and that name is the Moon. There are lots of nicknames and names in other languages (Luna, for instance) but technically in English it is just the Moon. The concept of a moon is uncapitalized; our moon is the Moon.

I've seen people trying to defend it today by saying "No, no, I just use it to brainstorm, bounce ideas, I do the actual writing" and with all the kindness in the world I need to tell you: if there is a stage of writing you are not good at, you need to get good, not use the plagiarism machine.

"All authors are using AI now! No, of course they are, they're just not saying so yet, but *everyone* is doing it so it's totally okay. You don't want to be left behind, do you? You're not uncool, are you?"

I hate that teaching has become policing and surveilling. I hate that learning has become evasion and shortcuts. I hate how AI papers say nothing at all; they have no capacity for originality, contribution, or social change.
