Coercion does not require physical force. Structural coercion occurs when the power imbalance between parties is so significant that the less powerful person cannot meaningfully refuse without risking consequences they depend on.

When a 16-year-old’s career access, industry mentorship, and emotional support all flow through a single 22-year-old man, the power differential itself becomes the coercive mechanism. You don’t need threats when the architecture does the work.

Brandy wrote she believed sex would “cement their bond”—only to later realize she never had a real choice. This is the hallmark of coerced consent: the victim internalizes the groomer’s framing and experiences exploitation as their own decision.
