I don't know quite how far back it goes, but it was already the case on the pre-Touch ID A1644

One funny consequence of Apple's Fn key not being internally-resolved is that it does absolutely nothing on Windows. When you connect a Magic Keyboard to a Windows PC, Fn+Right is just “Right”, not “End”. (Linux has a reverse-engineered driver in the kernel that takes care of this.)

As best as I can tell, the idea was that companies stocking stamps in the mail room would perforate them with the company initials to discourage theft/resale by employees

Top right corner of an envelope, showing a Liberty Bell Forever stamp perforated in the shape of a tri-force. The stamp is cancelled, the cancellation mark reads "PITTSBURGH PA 150 16 SEP 2023 PM 8 L" and bears the holiday "Thinking of You" graphic.

Since you mentioned the post office application, you may be entertained to find that the practice of perforating postage stamps before use to prevent theft is still explicitly permitted by USPS: pe.usps.com/text/DMM300/... I tried perforating my own in 2023 and had no issues using them.

The deadbolt-style hotel locks *can* be unlocked from the outside, with an appropriate override key, but will not unlock with a regular key card. They protect you against front desk accidentally programming a key for your room while checking another guest in.

fill out and sign this form, attach to your foia request: www.oig.dhs.gov/sites/defaul...
maybe add "A signed certification of identity is attached" to the request. do not attach copies of any other ID documents, they will only confuse them.

ohh, say more about that last bit! does the cross-device flow create a permanent link between phone and browser that you need to remember to revoke? or i guess it doesn't matter since requests need to be approved on the phone anyway. i think you've convinced me, this is great.

neither works very well for sharing accounts or signing into low-stakes stuff on machines you don't otherwise trust, which imo is unfortunate even if ultimately not enough to outweigh the massive benefits of not having passwords

> Both iOS and Android support adding virtual Suica and PASMO cards, ...

Is that true of any Android phones sold outside Japan? Afaict Pixels only support this in the Japanese market models, and I thought the other manufacturers did the same

I'm told that annoying cookie banners are caused not by bad law, but by malicious compliance on the part of tech companies. What a tragic example of regulation being subverted by bad-faith corporate actors, like the DE Min of Interior, the LV data protection authority, or the EU Council.
