The Supreme Court long relied on careful, time-tested procedures to issue decisions. But secret memos by the justices, obtained by The New York Times, show how the court decided to bypass those procedures and create its modern “shadow docket.” See key takeaways: www.nytimes.com/2026/04/18/u...

So much of this is applicable to the U.S. In particular, I hear many of these myths espoused by those who oppose Indigenous fire stewardship in the chaparral. It's great to see them debunked so thoroughly here.

Escalating cost of wildfires now adds $41 to the average monthly power bill for residential customers of California’s largest utility; report calls for systemic overhaul of how state responds to conflagrations as climate change-driven disasters threaten its economy. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
Today, all good people celebrate the April 9, 1865 surrender of the traitor Lee and his slavery-supporting army at Appomattox to the U.S Army led by General Grant.
THIS SUMS IT UP AS WELL AS ANYONE CAN:
"Within weeks ... major artificial-intelligence systems began repeating the invented condition ... The fake papers were then cited in peer-reviewed literature. Osmanovic Thunström says this suggests that some researchers are relying on AI-generated references without reading the underlying papers."

The Contiguous U.S. is in last place for season-to-date snowfall through the end of March. The places that are doing the worst are the places that need snow the most for summer reservoir storage. @weatherwest.bsky.social
New: The April update to the ECMWF seasonal forecast shows an even greater likelihood of a strong El Niño later this year.
A few ensemble members go to +3.5 °C anomaly in the Niño 3.4 region!
The Colorado River Basin was 6.6F warmer in March 2026 than the previous record warmest March. March 2026 was also in last place (since 1940) for precipitation. Lake Powell and Lake Mead are in big trouble.
“Critics raised alarm over the proposal to consolidate research stations while much of the Western United States is suffering from record temperatures and prolonged drought that increase the risk of wildfires this summer.” www.nytimes.com/2026/04/03/c...
Map depicting ECMWF ensemble predicted temperature anomalies for mid-April across the American West. Widespread anomalous warmth is again depicted, with some regions again more than 10-15 degrees F above seasonal norms.
After this cooler & wetter interlude, there are once again strong signals than anomalous April warmth will dominate the West for much of rest of April. It won't be as extreme as March, relatively speaking, but return of warmth & dryness will likely allow rapid snowmelt to resume.
Congrats to all the no kings-ers!

Experts say brutal temperatures in west threaten to melt sparse snowpack – and warn hot, dry conditions here to stay
But my main concern remains the interior West, especially Colorado River Basin. Here, there is a growing near-term risk (by later this spring and summer) of water supply and hydroelectric shortfalls, an early and intense fire season, and ecosystem degradation. This is a big deal.

Honored to be leading — but this race isn’t about me, it’s about delivering for California families. Let’s get to work.
Sunset over LA - one of the areas currently experiencing extreme early season heat.
RAPID ANALYSIS: It would be ‘virtually impossible’ for the record-breaking March heat currently scorching the U.S. West to occur without climate change.
We are seeing summer-like temperatures arrive exceptionally early from the Pacific to the Rockies this week. 🧵1/4

If you live anywhere there are wildfires, now is the time to ensure your home is prepared and your to-go bag is packed. With Nebraska already having its largest wildfire in history and the low snowpack across the West, it’s shaping up to be a significant fire season.

The Morrill Fire in Nebraska has killed 1 and consumed 549,000 acres with 0% containment. This is more than 10% of the entire area burned by U.S. wildfires in 2025, and makes it one of the 20 largest fires in U.S. history. Sunday forecast is grim: High Wind Warning, 25-35 mph winds, gusting to 50.
