I radically restructured the form; I may do lengthy personal essays and creative nonfiction here again, but after a long break and a lot of thought I just want to talk about prog records for a while. I’m fucking hungry for it. this also spans quite wide, from avant rock to classic prog to indie

You Can Never Let Them Think They Have A Chance | Defector I don’t remember the first time someone hit on me as a reporter. I believe this is because my brain has come to treat these events as unremarkable. For any woman in journalism, they pile up over the y...

I wrote about Dianna Russini, the constant pressure female reporters face to prove they aren't sleeping with sources (plus the pressure we do get from sources to get involved with them), and why all of this is so uncomfortable to talk about.

Yoko Tawada Is A Genius In Any Language | Defector There’s always a song to sing, but first a silence must be created for the song to be born in. — Yoko Tawada, Paul Celan and the Trans-Tibetan Angel The best argument I can make for why I like reading...

Yoko Tawada—exophone, master of the "poetic ravine," genius—is my favorite living author. Maybe she will be yours too: defector.com/yoko-tawada-...

The antilinearity of concussion recovery is maddening. You feel mentally itchy, agitated with the state of your addled brain. You are in pain, though it flickers up in different ways and at different intensities, depending on the day, the hour. You will try to grasp for a word to express the sensation, only for the grasping itself to exacerbate your pain. You can feel the physical effort of thinking. It's like lying down with a thick slab of rock on your chest that you cannot squirm out from under. Any movement only heightens the sensation of being pressed, as does any increase in heart rate or aerobic activity. You just have to lie there.

The post-AI-bubble regulation should start by making it illegal to do circular deals - money invested cannot be used to pay for services, money invested cannot be used for buying hardware, etc, etc. Hell, I'm game for making it illegal to invest in customers at all.

Love this @desperatehours.bsky.social joint on 'Mezzanine', which came out today in 1998.

And probably a good thing to listen to roughly 16 minutes from now

At 31 minutes, 'I Guess U Had to Be There' is concise but dense, endlessly dazzling and rich in its economy.

Massive Attack : Mezzanine | Treble 100, No. 68 | Treble With the release of their third album Mezzanine, Massive Attack took their signature trip-hop sound to a much darker place

'Mezzanine' dropped most of Massive Attack’s pretense of a good time whether in the streets or in the sheets, adding wobbly guitars to a digitized facsimile of brooding modern rock.
