I have no idea what the actual situation is so am only guessing, but it could've been bad information, could've been bad planning, or even something weird like an electronics failure in the aircraft and it ended up where it shouldn't have.
You're absolutely right - it *is* a lot to ask. That's why military pilots excel at a lot of things as well as doing a lot of things at the same time. It's also why accurate information is so important when planning flights.

Exactly! Some folks seem to be spinning this as some kind of new superweapon striking down a cutting-edge aircraft. It's a 1950s technology (with upgrades) shooting down a 1970s aircraft (with upgrades).
It's possible but it's more likely the pilot was flying in what they were told was an uncontested or low-risk area and had absolutely no idea that a missile had been launched and was tracking their aircraft.
Even if it did, the pilot needs to know that there's a missile out there so they know to fire the flares at the right time. The kicker with passive IR is that unless the pilot (or another set of eyes) actually *sees* the missile, they usually won't have any idea it's there.
That's exactly how that type of missile works. Good old heat-seeker.
Possible but always risky. And there's no need to test out new technologies for this particular scenario - even 30+ year old passive-IR tracking missiles are still quite effective against current 4th and 4.5 generation fighters.
