Yet the battle was only the beginning of Okinawa's militarization. Following the end of the war, Okinawa remained under U.S. military occupation until the 1972 Okinawa Reversion, and some thirty bases and approximately 30,000 troops remain in the prefecture.
In 2025, we recognized the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. This year also marks the anniversary of the Battle of Okinawa, one of the war’s most devastating campaigns, which resulted in approximately 200,000 deaths, including approximately 94,000 civilians over 82 days.
Can someone kindly explain the yellow highlight thingy to me?

I get to do one of those annoying "come work with me" posts. But seriously-- come work with me. GW is a great workplace!

What is the Japanese saying that is the equivalent of "Jinx! Knock on wood!" when you and another person say the same thing at the same time? I heard this somewhere and cannot recall it.
Approximately 20 members of Elon Musk’s staff have begun working within the Education Department. They have gained access to multiple sensitive internal systems, including a financial aid dataset containing the personal information of millions of students enrolled in the federal student aid program.
Giving access to SSNs, other data on government employees to non-employees like Musk is a violation of 5 USC 552a, and carries with it a penalty of $1000 per person whose data was accessed. We are building a case. Govt employees who want to participate should contact me directly
From a journalist friend: Just spreading the word. The CDC is purging data, so people should archive their favorite CDC datasets today, namely ones around race/ethnic diversity, LGBTQ, and reproductive health. Also health data involving climate. The youth risk behavior survey has already gone down.
