Happy National Library Week! This week you should:
1) Donate $ to your local Friends of the Library
2) Write to your public library director to thank them for standing up for diversity or to condemn them for caving to fascists
3) Plan a similar public comment for the next library board mtg

Under the Trump administration, the Environmental Protection Agency is relaxing longstanding clean water requirements that had been used to force Duke Energy to clean up the company's toxic coal ash disaster.

More perfect union: BREAKING: The Senate just passed the legislation allowing the devastation of the Boundary Waters. The motion passed 50-49, and now goes to Donald Trump’s desk.
Republicans just handed the Boundary Waters to a foreign corporation.
For the GOP, it’s foreign billionaires first, America last.
i'd never thought about the science behind lifting a dog, so hat tip to @caseyjohnston.bsky.social -- this week's 'she's a beast' newsletter was a delight, as always
I'm kind of fascinated by that big Lauren Sanchez Bezos feature in the Times. There's just nothing going on there at all, no insight or conflict or notable color, so the hook is just "this unfathomably rich but otherwise fatuous person enjoys their lifestyle a great deal." Fantastic stuff.
This is what a reliever’s entrance would look like in a Christopher Nolan movie where everything was backward and the scene before showed him giving up 8 runs.
Screenshot of sophiafornc from Threads: This is eleven year-old Genesis and six year-old Denis, two Durham elementary school students whose families came here to seek asylum. On Monday, they were detained by ICE and immediately sent back to Honduras without due process. Don't you dare tell me that this is making our country safer.
I am so angry. Two Durham, NC kids - 11-year-old Genesis and 6-year-old Denis of Burton Elementary Magnet School - were taken by ICE at their regular asylum case appointment, and immediately deported without due process.

Horrifying doesn't even begin to describe. This is pure evil.
No redemption for those who support and uphold these fascist policies.

In his new documentary, 'Everyone Is Lying to You For Money,' Ben McKenzie exposes cryptocurrency as a modern Ponzi scheme.
But he's ready to move on.

“Experts describe ‘surveillance wages’ as a system in which wages are based not on an employee’s performance or seniority, but on formulas that use their personal data, often collected without employees’ knowledge.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, citing "reasons of national security," has triggered a meeting this week that could exempt the oil and gas industry in the Gulf of Mexico from requirements of the Endangered Species Act.

Sally Rooney: Though I have no real understanding of the mechanics of football, and can only nod along helplessly at complex post-match analyses, I do enjoy watching people who are enormously good at something doing that thing very well. And Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah – the Premier League’s top goal scorer at the time of writing – is truly, spectacularly good at playing football. The ingenuity of professional footballers always impresses me, not only because of their extreme technical skill, but because of the unimaginably rapid pace at which they have to make high-pressure decisions. For me, watching Mohamed Salah play football is not unlike staring up at the stars and contemplating the vastness of the universe: it makes my own life seem nice and small.
Hadn’t come across this from Sally Rooney on Mo Salah until today, but I quite liked it. From a Guardian interview in 2017:

“Eastern Monarch Butterfly Numbers Increase, but Remain Below Historic Levels”. Many monarch butterflies clustered together on the branch of an evergreen tree.
Each year, Mexican conservationists track eastern monarchs by the area of the forest they use while overwintering. This year, they covered 7.24 acres, which is 64% more than last year. While still less than the 15+ acres common in the 1990s, we're glad to see improvement!

Given the horrific destruction that Israel’s extremist government has wrought on Gaza, Iran and Lebanon, the last thing in the world American taxpayers need to do right now is to provide 22,000 new bombs to the Netanyahu government.
No more weapons to support an illegal war.
