People are who not teachers may never understand that there are students who etch themselves on our souls.

It’s rare that we can predict who they’ll be, but there’s no mistaking it when it happens. For good or for ill, that’s my kid and their existence impacts how I see my job and the world.

I know that I may never win awards or prizes for the kind of teaching I do, but I also know that I make a difference in the lives of a few. And that, to me, is a fair bigger win than anything else.

Today, President Barack Obama and I read to a group of toddlers at Learning Through Play Pre-K Center in the South Bronx.
