Bucket full of freshly picked tomatoes
The faster tomato pickers here can fill 200 buckets in a 6 hr shift. They carry 2 buckets at once & run in & out of the field to maximize earnings during the 4-6 week harvest. Temps often exceed 100° so the workers start at 4-5am to be done by noon to avoid the heat. #WeFeedYou

The Scientists Who Got Ghosted by the NIH
Under Trump, their grant applications disappeared. What now?
Next, @stephaniemlee.bsky.social draws on internal NIH data to tell the stories of a dozen scientists who find their grants in limbo.
With peer review on pause, "they’re navigating constantly changing, legally dubious, sporadically communicated whims, with no clear way forward," she writes.

Is the dissertation dead? If so, what are the alternatives?
Dissertation alternatives, such as capstone projects and applied group-based projects, could better prepare graduates for their future careers. Discover what these might look like

Don’t know whether it’s appropriate to call this turtle, “beautiful”, but it sure seems apt to me - the shape of its head, the elongated neck, the eye profile…what a well-designed hunter! 😍

Which AI bot is best at writing? There was one clear winner in a test I just published @washingtonpost.com
I had ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, DeepSeek, Claude and a human (me!) draft 5 different kinds of tough emails. Then I asked 5 communication pros to judge them. wapo.st/3FFo34V

Pulp Librarian had a thread rundown on what makes something "pulp" and the description "Writers were expected to work quickly, often to a genre template, and were paid by the word. To maximise sales stories were expected to be vivid, impactful, easy to follow and full of exciting incidents. 'Show, Don't Tell' were their watchwords." (with a cover of a detective pulp magazine"
reminds me a lot of MMM narrators :-D

Map showing public lands including the public access road to Wheeler Geologic Area near Creede Colorado is on Trump’s auction block. By selling the access road, approach trail, and parking area, Trump would basically be selling off public access to Wheeler. Even though Wheeler would still be protected, one person could buy that parcel and effectively privatize access.
Look at this! The area circled in red is Wheeler Geologic Area. The entire access road and the entry/parking area (circled in yellow) for Wheeler is included in the auction. This would basically privatize access. Just blatant grift.

An Updated Assessment of Party-Driven Racial Attitude Change among Whites
Felt it useful to update my work on the bidirectional link between whites' partisanship & their views of Black folks with the recent ANES panel taking the tests to a new context and a new method to better tease out individual change. Results persist. We should stop treating racial attitudes as exog.

🤩 This photo represents an earlier, simpler era of when science thrived w/ perspectives looking out beyond "the horizon". While there were significant issues w/ societal bias, it tended not to be b/c of their intellect, their integrity and character, and the scientific curiosity of researchers.

Ben Lee became head of the theory group at the National Accelerator Laboratory (now Fermilab) in 1974. From left are Antonio Pagnamenta, Lee, Mary Gaillard, Shirley Ann Jackson, Robert Savit, Anthony Ichiro Sanda, Satish Joglekar, John Bronzan, and Jochen Bartels. (Photo courtesy of Fermilab.)
Absolutely stunning work of ⚛️ history in @physicstoday.bsky.social about Ben Lee, the Korean American who was the first head of theory at Fermilab. He hired the first Black woman particle theory lab staff in global history, Shirley Ann Jackson. #BlackandSTEM 🧪

I've made this point multiple times before but if Bluesky wants to grow, the things they need aren't opinion pundits but accounts that publish new information. That's breaking news reporters, politicians and stuff like official organization accounts that publish official statements.

Trump has federalized at least 2,000 National Guard forces and reportedly plans to deploy troops to Los Angeles over Governor Newsom’s objections. If that happens, it will be the first time since 1965 that a president has sent troops into a state without a state request. 1/19

Awesome, congratulations, @zoewithoutawhy.bsky.social, on your dissertation defense - no small feat!! Your research sounds timely. I presume that there are hints on how to advocate for BAs - might there be some of your research publicly available to read, i.e. no paywalls? 😅 - on limited budget.

Musk, DOGE & Trump are merely window dressings that keep people busy & not paying attention to real threats: the technocrats who created the 2025 agenda. Their intentions are to hang 47 & Musk out to dry before being replaced by Vance & the embedded key techno personnel being seeded across the govt

Hey, you know what goes really fast, takes up a lot more space, emits a lot more pollution/noise/GHG emissions, costs a lot more public money, and is FAR more dangerous in cities than any kind of bike in a city where most don’t drive?
Cars.
So, about that “enough is enough”…
