Thanks @patrickclarkin.bsky.social - it's abominable and a war crime to go after water sources. @petergleick.bsky.social has written a bunch on water being targets in this conflict thebulletin.org/2026/03/desa...

Over the past 2 years I've been guest editing a special issue for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics on #water & #nutrition in a changing world. I spoke w/ the EIC of JAND Linda Snetselaar about this SI & why #watersecurity is critical to nutrition and health

This combined with the fact that if a person is dehydrated and they rehydrate with SSBs that leads to increased kidney injury!
I was on @npr.org's #Shortwave Science Podcast in which they discuss whether you really need sports drinks talking about #hydration, oral rehydration salts, and more! Check it out: www.npr.org/transcripts/...
In hotter environments, it is critical to have locally-based water and heat based recommendations to ensure proper health and kidney function

Water turnover (the gold standard measurement) peaks around 7 liters per day for adults at age 40. Further we show that higher water turnover was associated with better hydration status and healthier kidney function.
In this new paper led by Amanda McGrosky, we demonstrate that #water needs are substantially higher among pastoralists living in a hot, semi-arid environment than worldwide water recommendations.

That's so kind of you to say @zoonotic1.bsky.social! Hope all is well
This is great. And it’s even more fun when that person is one of the best students you ever had the privilege to teach. Well done!
It was really fun getting texts and calls from old friends that they heard me on NPR this morning! Really enjoyed talking to NPR's @pien-huang.bsky.social about #water needs and #dehydration - have a listen! @psuanthro.bsky.social @pennstateuniv.bsky.social @pop.psu.edu

one of my favorite things about knowing so many amazing researchers is hearing them on @npr.org! I woke up to texts this morning from people saying they heard @asherrosinger.bsky.social talking about hydration!! www.npr.org/2025/08/04/n...
Excited to share our paper in the Aug issue of Hypertension! Shockingly no health standards exist for sodium & chloride in drinking water, only palatability standards. We show water NaCl is assoc w higher BP, hypertension & albuminuria w effects below palatability

All-star alert! Huge congratulations to @kellyrosinger.bsky.social and team on their Gates Foundation grant!
New at Can We Still Govern: An anonymous NIH employee maps out the GOP budget gameplan to permanently gut our most important science agency.
Impoundment, delay and red tape will create artificial "savings" that become the new benchmark for NIH budgets.

On this #WorldWaterDay2025, I'm up in northern Kenya working to better understand how variation in drinking water salinity is affecting human health & potential interventions. This issue will be increasingly important as freshwater salinization affects more water supplies hhd.psu.edu/college-news...

“Salt intake is a key risk factor for hypertension and chronic kidney disease. Yet, drinking water is overlooked as a source of salt,” Rosinger explained. “This study will help us understand how much it matters when saltwater enters our drinking water”

Really important thread from one of the best program officers NSF had - if you are wondering about NSF read below
Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)
I saw that one report - but I haven't seen any other news stories about it
The NIH Climate Change and Health Initiative website (climateandhealth.nih.gov) is still down - any insights? @davidcorn.bsky.social
YIKES!!! The climate change and health initiative website at NIH is gone! All these websites from climateandhealth.nih.gov are down

Thanks to the National Science Foundation - Research Experiences for Undergraduates in particular for funding the field school. Those programs are incredibly valuable for providing research and training experiences as well as mentorship that results in real products that help the careers of students
A bright spot - one of my mentored undergrads just had a first author paper published!! We evaluated how different #heatstress measures relate to #hydration status & #thermal #heat perception in a semi-arid environment.
tl/dr: Ambient temp & WBGT > heat index
