And it's thanks to M3 that I ever gave Undertale a chance. When UT was released I was out of the loop, didn't know anything about it and didn't care for it. But my cousin insisted, said it reminded her of M3. That was all it took to persuade me... Thanks to M3 I'm now also an insufferable UT fan lol

I did eventually play Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings, but because I experienced them later I don't have the same nostalgia for them that my friends who came from starmen dot net have. Like, yeah they were fun games too! But to me, M3 is the memorable one with the special place in my heart.

As evidenced by the thread I posted yesterday, I drew sooo much M3 fanart, mostly on an online drawing website called Tegaki E, where I met and befriended other Mother fanartists. I don't know if this counts as being involved in fandom, on such a niche website, but man those were fun times.

Of course when the English patch was finally released I played it again. It was an even more hilarious, thrilling, and devastating experience without the language barrier. And then I bought the JP GBA game so I could play it again again... Even now the story, characters, and music are some of my fav

Even with the language barrier, the game's emotional beats still hit so hard. The soundtrack did so much to convey the story that I didn't even need to be able to understand the words on the screen. The ending, god. Not to spoil anything specific, but iykyk.

So I did the most logical thing to verify for myself, and played the game in Japanese with a GameFAQs guide (the English patch hadn't released yet). Thanks to the game having almost no kanji characters, I was able to practice reading and learning incredibly fun but useless vocabulary

Back then everyone was making a big fuss about this new Lucas character and his tragic backstory and the amazing game he came from, and I was incredulous. Like, you mean to tell me the weenie crybaby loser kid from the SSB subspace story was actually a big deal?? No way, I couldn't believe it.

Like most normal people, I didn't learn about Mother 3 until the release of Super Smash Brothers Brawl in 2008 (In fact, Mother 3 was the first Mother game I had ever played. I actually went through the series completely backwards 😅 (and I never actually finished 1 now that I think about it))

Luckily(?) for me this was my first exposure to the Mother series, so I had 0 comparisons and expectations going in. Except for the emotional ass kicking, I knew to expect that, and was still left a sobbing mess anyway. A+, 5 stars, would get kicked again
