What a shame they didn't have someone like 'The Basher' to gently correct them in their formative years.

One of my English teachers, Jim 'The Basher' Quinlan, died recently in Cork.
When I was 14, I challenged his view that all poetry meant *something*.
So he challenged us to write a poem that meant nothing.
The only two lines I remember are:

That was my takeaway too:
a) how would you write without using *any* symbolism?
b) why would you want to?
Rules to curb trans people's rights to participate in anything opens up everyone's manner, clothing, physical appearance to intrusive scrutiny and potential challenge. A worked example. History also shows allowing erasure of rights for one group soon sees others targeted. This is not a 'them' issue.
There's a lot of competition for the worst person but the thing about Rowling that sometimes pushes her to the top of my list is that she has absolutely *nothing* to gain from her grim awfulness to - and campaign against - trans people. It's pure unbridled hate for its own sake. She just enjoys it.
