Let me tell you a story about the 'Blue Bus paradox' and a counter-intuitive quirk of using probability in legal proof... 🧵

If all you can do is review a paper by putting it into ChatGPT (or similar), maybe you shouldn't accept to review in the first place.
📌
Thanks Sergio! That is exactly what we’re hoping for.
We found a steady and continued improvement in the dental status of both children and adults in Denmark over the past decades.

If you openly acknowledge that you don't understand much about epidemiology or statistics, you should probably not agree to review such articles, and especially not make strong recommendations to accept or reject them in your evaluation.

Let us start 2025 in a positive mood: here are 10 methods things researchers can worry *less* about in 2025
Sounds interesting
2. Frontiers for Young Minds
Now this is an excellent initiative. If you haven't heard of this, researchers write papers targeted at kids or teenagers. But the kicker is that your target audience co-peer reviews the paper! Usually, this is done collectively as a science class
Big news from Finnish publication forum. Almost all MDPI and Frontiers journals will be downgraded to level 0 and thus are not considered as properly peer reviewed trustworthy scientific journals.

I hope this is just the beginning. We need to be bold and deindex some more journals. @raittioe.bsky.social, I guess you know this agency. Is it ok? julkaisufoorumi.fi/en/news/chan...
Good decision, indeed. These journal ratings are used to grade publication production in the Finnish unis. Affects e.g. their funding from the state, also used in individual evaluations. So they likely have some impact locally 😊

A positive decision letter is a wonderful way to end the week. 🙏
Thanks for smooth process @profsarahbaker.bsky.social and the team @commdentoralepi.bsky.social
Stay tuned.

And that we should trust the most 😬
Taking account the results of the study, I was also thinking what was the deception here after all?
Researchers struggled to get approval from an ethics committee. They planned to have healthy people visit dentists for examinations (but refuse X-rays and treatments).
But isn't that something the whole profession is calling for, as if there isn't a single patient who wouldn't benefit from it?
If you don’t have symptoms or dental disease history, think twice before going to a dentist?

As more people are moving over here I thought it was time to reshare the oral and dental health starter pack

Reviewing a manuscript that includes several senior authors, who seem not to have reviewed the manuscript thoroughly themselves, is very unfortunate. For the reviewers/editors, but particularly for the junior members of the author team.
