Whatever status the U.S. once held, and it has been, for decades, much more ambiguous than the nation and its friends would like to think, is ashes.

We will not be forgiven this president, and we will never be anything like leaders again; the age of American Empire is over.

This is absolutely right. I know many Americans on here support maximal consequences for Trump et al & significant reforms to guard against any return of Trumpism. But even in the unlikely scenario they achieve that, allies as well as enemies now have the measure of the risk the US can pose to them.
