I am ok with bangernomics, but I would hate to spend all the money necessary for a new car.
As for activities, I think families are oversubscribed nowadays. When I was young, playing in the back lane was the activity!

Making not like for like comparisons wades into murky territories IMHO. Other examples are: should cyclists pay insurance and licensing? Should they pay for parking?

That's right. Most older builds are gravity fed with header tanks for cold water. Newer systems run at mains pressure.
That's what people used to do with their immersion heaters in the UK - put a timer on them and only heat water when it's going to be used.
Over here I notice they are designed to be powered constantly with the thermostat set to 140F/60C to protect against Legionella.
