Happy Hallowe'en friends!

On this day in 1933 my Slovakian great grandma was 3 days into her Canadian immigration journey and saw trick or treaters out the window of a train when it stopped in Winnipeg.

She got very scared and thought Canada was a spooky, weird place!

It is 🎃

Holy Smokes. Ireland just elected a left-leaning female president and she's awesome!

A former psychologist, former barrister, former competitive badminton player, ran so many marathons she lost count, and comes from a family of 14 siblings raised by a single father. 🫣 🇮🇪

An ink drawing of three anthropomorphic cats. One hangs onto a rope with both paws, just able to keep its chin above the rope. Two other cats, however, on either side of the cat are giving it a boost. All the cats are smiling suggesting friendliness and joy. Large text at top reads "Hang in there, comrade!," a play on the popular "hang in there, baby" cat poster of the 1970's.

Two pictures of swans with cygnets on a lake, and a poem.

Title:
Seven reasons not to eat swans.
An immigrant’s poem.

Poem text:
Swans, we know, are hard to snatch,
much too big for hand-held nets.
That’s why we as immigrants
would rather catch some sun than swans.
Swans, notoriously vicious,
do not make for tasty dishes.
That’s why we as immigrants
choose eating mushrooms over swans.
Swans look well after their young,
teach them, carry them along.
That’s why we as immigrants
like right-wingers far less than swans.
When a swan acts like an anus,
it’s not planned; not truly heinous.
That’s why we as immigrants
choose fighting fascists over swans.
Swans give nature their full backing,
don’t dump rubbish, don’t do fracking.
That’s why we as immigrants
hate Reform UK more than swans.
Swans believe in right of movement,
see open borders as improvement.
That’s why we as immigrants
would never think of killing swans.
Swans don’t engage in punching down,
unlike Reform UK’s chief clown.
That’s why we as immigrants
might punch Farage, but not hurt swans.

Canada’s Parliament just gave Charlie Kirk a standing ovation.

You can oppose political violence without rewriting the legacy of a man who did a lot of harm to vulnerable and marginalized communities.

But Canada’s politicians, some media and many employers don’t seem to entirely understand that:

The standing ovation in Parliament today to honour Charlie Kirk was one of the most embarrassing things I’ve ever seen from that building, and I gotta tell you, that list is long

It's breathtaking to watch autocrats weaponize the civil rights movement on behalf of the putative safety of Jews in order to send people who are opposing genocide to literal death camps - and Jews who oppose this are labelled terrorist sympathizers.

Poilievre pledges to use notwithstanding clause to allow longer sentences for multiple murderers Legal experts criticized the Conservative Leader’s proposal to revive a law that permitted judges to stack parole waiting periods

Michael Spratt, an Ottawa criminal-defence lawyer, pilloried the proposal and said that all of Mr. Poilievre’s criminal justice policies “rip up” the Constitution.
“That is just unbecoming of a leader, unbecoming of a serious politician …,” he said.

How was popcorn discovered? An archaeologist on its likely appeal for people in the Americas millennia ago Corn has its roots in Mexico about 9,000 years ago.

A good guess for the origin of popcorn is that drying corn began as a useful way of preserving and storing food.

And then one day some fell into the cooking fire 🌽🔥
