As we descend further into the madness of the holidays where gathering with family is customary, I would like to give a few gentle reminders. 1 - You do not owe anything to someone because they are family. This includes putting yourself at risk of being sick. 1a - This includes family members who are toxic and hurtful to you in the name of the holiday spirit. 1b. This includes putting yourself in spaces of people who actively voted against your interests. 2 - Chosen family is just as, if not more, valid. 3 - Saying "No" should be normalized. It is a full sentence. 4 - Gifts, while nice, are not obligatory. 4a - Gifts do not have to be extravagant to be meaningful 4b - Gifts are not a transaction. You do not have to give someone a gift because they gave one to you, especially if it would hurt you financially or emotionally to do so 4c - You do not have to accept gifts from hurtful people just to be polite. 5 - You are important. You are loved. You are strong. 6 - You do not need to watch what you eat, hold your tongue, give your creepy uncle a hug/kiss, put up with racist/homophobic/xenophobic/transphobic rhetoric. 6a - You are allowed to shut it down and not worry about hurting Aunt Karen's fragile feelings. 6b. That includes bluntly telling someone they're fascist. 7 - Food is morally neutral. Don't let anyone make you feel bad about enjoying the holiday meal. Nobody has the right to make a comment on your choices or your body 8 - Just because you agreed to a get together does not mean you have to stay the whole time. If you are uncomfortable, you are allowed to remove yourself from that situation. 9 - "But x is still family!" And? The blood of the covenant (chosen family) is thicker than the water of the womb (bio family) and nobody is entitled to your forgiveness, emotional bandwidth, or time. 10 - It's okay to go no or low contact with toxic people regardless of who they are. Some gentle reminders for the oncoming Holiday season. I know that this holiday with family might be a little fraught, or perhaps a little lonely. Please remember self care is an act of rebellion when the oppressors take joy in making you feel small and alone.
